‘Like the manager said…’: Wright and Lineker both agree on ‘fortunate’ claim after Everton loss to Man United

Everton fell to yet another defeat yesterday afternoon, as they lost 2-0 to Manchester United despite their dominance.

It was a typical performance that Evertonians have been forced to endure all too often this campaign, in which they were not shy of opportunities to make their mark on the match, but once again lacked the quality and confidence to actually put the Red Devils to the sword.

Such a result extends their woeful record at Old Trafford, in which they have won just once in 32 years, and also marked yet another Premier League game without a win.

Their last came in mid-December, nearly three months ago now.

Despite this run, two pundits agreed on one positive point about Everton.

What Ian Wright and Gary Lineker said about Everton

Speaking on last night’s BBC Match of the Day, both Ian Wright and Gary Lineker were in agreement over one point made earlier in the show by Sean Dyche.

Everton found themselves in the same old position as always yesterday afternoon, forging chance after chance to no avail.

Well, these pundits would seek to laud their efforts on the road despite yet another poor result, while also lambasting the hosts.

Lineker first noted: ‘It’s kind of an all too familiar tale really for Everton, so profligate in front of goal.’

Wright would agree: ‘Yes, like the manager said there, they’re doing everything right but it’s the composure and some of the decisions they’re making there at the death. They started the game so well…

‘They’re very unlucky today but Man United were just very clinical with their penalties. I thought they were very fortunate because Everton’s game plan was very good.’

Same old story for Everton

Well, it feels like Groundhog Day every single weekend at the moment for Everton, who have once again dominated, enjoyed a plethora of golden chances to score, missed them all and been sorely punished.

Their work in between both boxes was unparalleled, and once again there was only one side seeking to enforce their will on the match.

But despite finding themselves in the driving seat, it is only then that Dyche’s men seem to crumble, burdened by the weight of expectation that only grows as they continue to miss chances.

In the end, the Toffees rained down 23 shots at Old Trafford, six of which troubled Andre Onana’s goal.

That is a startling figure, made even more so by the blatant profligacy on display. Therefore, when viewing that statistic, it is no surprise that both Wright and Lineker came to the same conclusion.

However, Everton cannot keep remarking on how unlucky they have got. They need to flip the script, as time is running out for them to save themselves.
