‘Disgusted’: Peter Grant doesn’t hold back when he hears the latest Celtic update from the SFA
The Celtic red card furore rumbles on as Peter Grant lets the SFA have it both barrels after hearing the latest update from the games’ governing body.
All week we have listened to experts, pundits and even Brendan Rodgers‘ opinion on the red card Hyunjun Yang received at Hearts on Sunday.
This week, Celtic decided to appeal the decision and after hearing that the SFA has upheld the red card and Yang’s subsequent three-game ban, Grant was absolutely furious and let the Hampden suits know exactly what he thought of their conclusion.
Grant said [The Go Radio Football Show], “But the referees, I have been disgusted in the fact that two of them [John Beaton and Don Robertson] when they take it into their leader Crawford Allan, if they three guys can’t get the right decision out of there [the SFA offices], that tells you how bad a state we’re in terms of refereeing decisions.
“He’s made the correct decision for giving a free kick if he says the boot’s high, fair enough.
“A yellow card I’d have argued with that. The red card was a disgrace, but not to change it.
“Then for them to go back to the [SFA] office and not to change it when Celtic have asked them to take a look at it and not to change it again.
“I’m not just saying this for Celtic, genuinely I’m saying this for football. VAR is a disgrace. And the referees are so poor if they can’t get that decision right.”
Wow. Brilliant stuff from Grant and it’s so refreshing to hear a pundit and former Celtic player speak so passionately about this issue. But then, Grant has always been like that.
Whether it’s good, bad or indifferent, the former Hoops star is generally balanced and fair on his opinion on Celtic and the game overall.
But even here, Grant is clearly incensed by not only VAR but the failure of the SFA to come the correct conclusion regarding Yang’s dismissal.
Now Celtic must face the next three league games without the South Korean and if my calculations are correct, he will miss the Ibrox Glasgow Derby.
That is a huge blow for Rodgers as he may also miss the fixture due to being called up by the SFA for his post-match Hearts comments.
All the wrong things are happening at the wrong time for Celtic. Let’s hope this galvanises the team and motivates them to get this title over the line.
