All of Jared Goff’s Comments After the Lions Beat the Colts
In Week 12, Jared Goff goes down the win over the Indianapolis Colts.
The Detroit Lions beat the Indianapolis Colts 24-6, making them 10-1 on the season. Here is what quarterback Jared Goff said at the press conference after the game.
About how well the defence played:
“They’re playing really well right now.” It’s clear that what they’ve done in the last two games is pretty good. I think you’re even going back to the second half in Houston, right? They haven’t given up a score yet. Not easy, and they’re playing great basketball. They really lock down in the red zone, and no one has scored in a while.
About how valuable wide receiver Tim Patrick is:
“He’s great.” He plays baseball really well. He always does the right thing. He has a big body. His hands are very good. He grabs the ball away from himself. I trust him when we are driving. I’m sure he’ll go get it if I throw it in there. Today he had a few good ones.
If he thinks Amon-Ra St. Brown could be the backup punt returner, he said:
“Do I think about it?” Not really. What are they going to do? I believed he did well today.
About having two good running backs:
“It’s not often that we have two bell cows.” Indeed. You can give the ball to two guys a lot. One of them goes down there for a while, and then the other guy comes up. All through the year, it will go both ways. They both do great work, and we’re lucky to have them.
About the team that ran the ball a lot on third down:
“Well, I think that’s what we usually think when that happens: we’re going to go for it on fourth down anyway.” We thought for sure they would call one of their third downs, which would mean our run should be pretty good. We’ll go for it at the very least on fourth-and-short. This lets us do what we did, which is to pop a run for 15 yards or more. It’s not often that you can do that and have two backs that can kind of do that.
What gives them the confidence to go for it on fourth down:
“When he calls that play, I’m sure.” If the clock strikes zero and there is a negative run, we will kick a field goal. But if he calls a run, I think we all know, “Okay, we have two downs.” In our minds, it looks more like second-and-eight than third-and-eight. That’s how we play it.
About what drives people to win on the road:
“On the road, we meet.” We’re tough on the road. And Dan Campbell said it. He was talking about all the way back to the first road game we won here, which I think was at Chicago in ’22 because we didn’t win a game the first year. He said that since then we’re 16–5, which is really amazing. We’re tough on the road. We love it. On the road, we meet. It’s like “we are us against the world.” Then, as you said, it’s fun when our own friends come here. It’s really hard to believe how they act. They do a great job.
Whether or not people singing his name on the road:
There’s something pretty cool about being on the road, even if they do my song or something. You should be proud to have fans who go on trips and make a change along the way. I recently thought about this. They don’t just go to the game to watch it; they go to change it. They do that at home, and they still do it on the road today. I keep going back to Houston and Arizona. It’s like they come in to change the game, and they do it themselves, which we love. We love it. I’ll never take for granted the love they have for me and our team.
About what he has planned for the next 24 hours:
“I’m going to get to that tape quickly—probably tonight—and start working on them. Our coaching staff should have some stuff ready for us by tomorrow morning, and then we’ll get going.”
About having two 10-win seasons in a row:
“That’s pretty cool, really cool.” Obviously, the turn around has been great, as you said. We’re excited, but that doesn’t mean we’re happy and relaxed. Things are going well for us right now, but this week we play a division team at home in a big test. We haven’t won on Thanksgiving in a while, and that’s something we want to change.
Getting over various accidents and keeping calm while everything is going on:
A little chaos was going on in the circle as people tried to figure out where everyone was. I think Ben Johnson called a screen, which made it easy for the back side of the play. They knew what they were doing. After Dan Skipper joined, things continued as planned. But yeah, our guys got used to things after that. For a second, there was a bit of chaos, yes.
