After three disappointing years to start his career, Detroit Lions defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike has taken a step forward in 2024, something that could’ve been predicted following a strong offseason for the former second-round pick.

Onwuzurike, who has seen increased playing time this season, has posted career-highs in sacks (1.5) and pressures (29) in 12 games and is looking like a completely different player overall during his fourth season in the NFL.

His promotion comes at an ideal moment, since Onwuzurike is in the final year of his $8.1 million rookie contract. The Washington product is presently battling with an injury, but it is not significant, and if he can return healthy and complete the season strong, Onwuzurike might earn a sizable salary in 2025.

In a recent piece outlining an ideal strategy for the Chicago Bears’ offseason, Windy City Gridiron’s Jacob Infante suggests that the team sign Onwuzurike to a two-year, $9 million contract in 2025 free agency. Infante also hopes Chicago signs wide receiver Tim Patrick and cornerback Emmanuel Moseley.

“Onwuzurike, Patrick and Moseley are three players coming over from Detroit to make the jump with their current coaches and serve as rotational players on their respective sides of the ball,” Infante stated in his letter.

In addition to his pass-rushing skills, Onwuzurike, who has some inside/outside mobility, might also strengthen the Bears’ run defense, which currently ranks 26th.

In addition to acquiring those three players from Detroit, Infante wants the Bears to further raid the Lions by signing offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as head coach, offensive line coach Hank Fraley as offensive coordinator, and defensive line coach Terrell Williams as defensive coordinator.

While Lions supporters are already braced for many coaching changes given the team’s recent success, Johnson leaving Detroit for Chicago would be a difficult pill to take.

The Lions are sure to be interested in re-signing Onwuzurike in 2025, but money will be a factor, since Detroit has already invested heavily in their defensive line, even before signing Aidan Hutchinson to a contract extension.

Not to add, Onwuzurike may be searching for a starting spot, which the Lions are unlikely to grant because Alim McNeill and D.J. Reader are both under contract in 2025.

Given all of this, Onwuzurike may play somewhere in 2025, and the Bears are certainly a feasible option.
