The New England Patriots paid respect to former wide receiver Randy Moss, who recently announced a cancer diagnosis, ahead of their home game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday.

The Patriots also displayed a banner with Moss’ iconic No. 81 on the Gillette Stadium field before the game.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer played with the Patriots from 2007 to 2010, most notably collecting an NFL-high 23 touchdowns for a 2007 squad that went 16-0 in the regular season.

Moss is one of the best wide receivers the NFL has ever seen. He is a six-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro, ranking second in receiving touchdowns (156) and fourth in receiving yards (15,292).

Moss and Tom Brady produced probably the finest single-season quarterback/wide receiver tandem in NFL history in 2007, on top of all of his other incredible exploits during his career.

Moss caught 259 passes for 3,904 yards and 50 touchdowns over his three-plus seasons in New England (52 games).

Following his cancer diagnosis, Moss has received a lot of support and affection. The Vikings paid homage before their December 16 game against the Chicago Bears in front of a raucous M&T Bank Stadium crowd.

Moss’ former Viking wide receiver teammates, Cris Carter and Jake Reed, raised his No. 84 jersey during the coin toss.

During his Dec. 13 cancer diagnosis reveal video, Moss revealed that physicians successfully removed a tumor “in the bowel duct right between the pancreas and the liver” during a Whipple technique.

The 47-year-old is currently undergoing “some chemo and radiation” but wants to return to ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown whenever he is healthy enough.
