Brignone Triumphs in Giant Slalom as Shiffrin Skis Out, Extends World Cup Lead

Federica Brignone claimed a commanding victory in Sunday’s World Cup giant slalom, bolstering her overall lead in the standings after a dramatic race that saw Mikaela Shiffrin ski out in the first run.

The Italian veteran delivered two precise and aggressive runs on the challenging course in Are, Sweden, showcasing her technical mastery and consistency. Brignone’s win not only adds to her already impressive World Cup resume but also solidifies her position at the top of the overall leaderboard as the season enters its final stretch.

“Everything clicked today,” Brignone said after the race. “I felt confident from the first gate, and I just let the skis run. It’s always special to win, especially with the pressure of the overall title in play.”

Brignone’s main rival, Mikaela Shiffrin, was expected to contend for the podium but made an uncharacteristic mistake in the first run, skiing out midway through her descent. The American star, who recently returned to competition after recovering from injury, appeared disappointed but remained upbeat.

“I was attacking and just went a little too hard on that one turn,” Shiffrin said. “It’s frustrating, but that’s ski racing. I’ll reset and look ahead to the next one.”

Brignone’s win gives her a valuable points cushion in the overall World Cup standings. With just a few races remaining in the season, she now holds a decisive advantage, though the title is still within reach for several contenders depending on the final events.

The World Cup circuit continues next weekend, with athletes heading to Saalbach, Austria, for the final races of the season. All eyes will be on Brignone to see if she can maintain her momentum and secure the coveted crystal globe.
