Ccv Questions The Use of VAR When Referees Have a Clear View
Celtic centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers has questioned why referees in Scotland use VAR, particularly when they have a clear view of an incident.
It comes after his side were undone by some debatable decisions at Tynecastle on Sunday that undoubtedly cost them the game. The Hoops have appealed Yang’s red card and wrote to the SFA raising concerns about VAR and decisions made in the match.
Stand-in captain Carter-Vickers thinks VAR shouldn’t be used unless a ref can’t see an incident clearly because slowed-down videos and stills always make them look ten times worse.
The United States internationalist believes it is wrong that Don Robertson changed his decision despite initially giving Yang a yellow when he had a fine view of what happened. Speaking after the weekend loss, Carter-Vickers said (Glasgow Times): “You can debate whether it was a red card or not, but, for me, the ref has seen it live.
“He has a clear view of it and he gives a yellow card. So for him to change it when he goes to the monitor? I’m not sure that’s right.
“As we all know, when images are slowed down they can look a lot worse. I would like the referee to stick with his original decision, especially when he had a clear view of it first time around.
“In that scenario (the Yang challenge on Cochrane) he had a great view of it first time around and he gave a yellow card. I just don’t understand it. Not just in that case, in any case. Once a referee has seen it clearly, there is no need for him to have a second look in my opinion.”
In fairness to the 26-year-old, he does have a point. One of the main concerns with VAR when it was brought in is that it could re-referee the game and on Sunday, that was the case.
Every key decision that was made by Don Robertson bar the Celtic penalty was overturned, and Carter-Vickers, along with much of the Celtic support, can’t quite comprehend why.
Rangers have ‘huge’ £10m disadvantage in title race with Celtic as big wages claim makes one thing clear
A football finance expert has claimed Celtic have a £10m gap on Rangers when it comes to squad valuations.
The Old Firm rivals have huge finances in comparison to their Premiership rivals but that couldn’t save both of them from defeat over the weekend. Rangers were stunned at home to Motherwell while Celtic lost 2-0 to Hearts, having been reduced to 10-men early in the first half.
It means Philippe Clement’s side are still two points ahead in a tight title race that looks destined to go the distance. Speaking to Football Insider, finance expert Maguire says the current title holders have a higher squad value, and it should come with a title upper-hand.
He said: “There is an argument for Celtic to invest more if they are behind Rangers in the table. They have always operated very prudently and if we take a look at the 2022-23 season, they had over 50 percent of the total cost of all squads in the Scottish Premiership.
“Now if they can’t win the league when they have that financial advantage and they’re generating more money than their rivals then I think things are not necessarily wrong from a financial point of view. Either Celtic are underperforming or Rangers are over-performing in order for that to be the case.
“Celtic are financially ahead of Rangers and therefore that should give them an advantage because we know that in terms of wages, their wage bill is 20 percent more than Rangers. Their squad cost is also £10million more than Rangers, which is huge and a lot of money in the Scottish market.“
Celtic Man Hasn’t Got Ruthless Streak Says Former Top Flight Star
Former top flight star Allan Preston feels that Celtic defender Liam Scales lacks the ruthless streak that his defensive partner Cameron Carter-Vickers has got.
Scales started alongside Carter-Vickers during Celtic’s 2-0 defeat at Hearts in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.
Following an early penalty miss and sending off for Celtic, Hearts scored twice, grabbing their own penalty, which Jorge Grant converted, and then striking through Lawrence Shankland.
The result meant that Celtic missed the chance to overtake Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.
Former Hearts man Preston thinks that Shankland targeted Scales instead of Carter-Vickers due to the fact the Celtic man does not have the same ruthless streak.
“Listen, Scales has been great, he has, but he is still relatively inexperienced”, Preston said on BBC Radio Scotland.
“I just think Shankland [thinks] I am going to plant myself on you. Carter-Vickers is a different proposition, big, strong beast.
“But Scales has not got at the moment that ruthless streak that Carter-Vickers has got.”
Shankland has now hit the 20 goals mark for the season in the Scottish Premiership, while Celtic’s top league goalscorer is Matt O’Riley with eleven.
