Celtic stay top of Scottish Premiership after Rangers game postponed
Celtic will remain top of the Scottish Premiership after it was announced that Rangers’ away fixture to Dundee was postponed today.
Brendan Rodgers took Celtic back to the summit of Scottish football after his team’s impressive 3-1 win over St Johnstone yesterday.
Goals from Kyogo Furuhashi, Nicolas Kuhn and James Forrest ensured three vital Premiership points stayed at Celtic Park and put pressure on the Ibrox club to win their tricky fixture against a Dundee side who are chasing a top-six place just before the split.
But that opportunity has been denied to the Ibrox side after an announcement by Dundee on social media channel X confirmed that the Dens Park fixture is postponed due to a water-logged pitch.
The statement read, “Match Postponed – Rangers
“Following the referee’s second pitch inspection this morning, today’s cinch Premiership match with Rangers has been postponed.
“Recent rainfall has meant the pitch has become waterlogged and the match has been called off.”
Advantage Celtic in the title race
Whilst I appreciate that Rangers do have a game in hand and are likely to be favourites to win it, every football fan will tell you that it’s always best to have the points in the bag at this stage of the season.
The psychological lift the Celtic players will get from seeing themselves at the top of the table for the next two weeks cannot be underestimated.
All Brendan Rodgers needs to worry about is his next upcoming game where Rangers are now in a situation where it is likely that they face a midweek fixture pile-up just before the Glasgow Derby.
And everyone will agree that Rangers having that extra game wedged inside a week where the pressure is already mounting is not an ideal situation when Celtic have put the pressure on as the chasing team.
This is a situation the Ibrox club have not been in for a long time and it will be very interesting to see how they can cope with it.
Rangers have a resurgent Hibs at Ibrox to deal with after the international break whereas Celtic face a trip to struggling Livingston.
After that, it’s the Ibrox Glasgow Derby and if Celtic takes all three points from there, a potential four-point lead at the top of the table will be crucial at this stage of the season especially as Celtic have a home tie against St Mirren and Rangers face a tricky trip to Ross County just before the split.
This title race is shaping up quite nicely for the Celtic manager.
