Celtic to ‘look’ at West Brom loan star’s situation this summer as Brendan Rodgers shares update
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has said they will ‘look’ at Mikey Johnston’s situation this summer when he returns from his West Brom loan.
West Brom swooped to land the winger on a temporary basis in the January transfer window on a deal until the end of the season
Johnston, 24, has since impressed for the Baggies in the Championship and has scored six goals in nine games.
Rodgers has provided this update on his future at Celtic Park, as per a report by the Daily Record: “I spoke to him in the summer when he was looking to go on loan and I said stay and get your training right because you’ve not had a period of training consistently never mind playing games.
“He was able to do that then he featured in some games for us and once he trained and featured it was then about getting him game time. He has gone and done fantastic and shown the talent everyone knows he has. Hopefully he continues with that and then we can look at it again in the summer.”
West Brom man to have future assessed
West Brom’s decision to land Johnston earlier this winter was a masterstroke and he has adapted to life in England with ease.
He has given Carlos Corberan more pace and power in attacking areas and he is proving to be a real handful for second tier defenders.
Johnston has been on the books at Celtic for his whole career to date and rose up through the academy ranks of the Glasgow giants.
The Republic of Ireland international was a regular for the Hoops at various youth levels before bursting into the first-team picture.
He has played 92 matches for the Scottish Premiership outfit and has scored 13 goals, as well as having a loan spell away in Portugal at Vitória de Guimarães in the last campaign to get some experience under his belt.
West Brom’s chances of bringing him back to the Hawthorns on a permanent basis are likely to depend on what league they find themselves in next term.
They are currently eyeing promotion to the Premier League and are sat in 5th position in the table.
The Baggies won 2-0 at home to Bristol City last time out to keep their momentum going and are back in action after the international break with fixtures against Millwall away and Watford at home.
