Championship: Magic Johnston strikes again in WBA draw

Republic of Ireland winger Mikey Johnston scored another spectacular effort, as promotion-chasers West Bromwich Albion drew 2-2 at Queen’s Park Rangers.

Johnston is gaining a reputation for scoring stunning goals and he struck another after 25 minutes to haul Albion level, following Sam Field’s opener.

The Celtic loanee cut in from the left, past Jimmy Dunne and Paul Smyth, and sent a cracking strike off the post to make it four goals in eight appearances since joining the Baggies at the beginning of February.

Grady Diangana put the visitors ahead two minutes later, before QPR forward Michael Frey had a second-half penalty saved by Alex Palmer,

The R’s did find their equaliser though, as Field nodded home with nine minutes left to move the hosts a point above the relegation zone.

Elsewhere, Middlesbrough secured a 3-1 win over 10-man Norwich at the Riverside Stadium.

Ashley Barnes scored the opener but Norwich’s work was undone after 30 minutes when Borja Sainz was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Jonny Howson.

The hosts then cruised to victory through strikes from Marcus Forss, Emmanuel Latte Lath and Lukas Engel.

Cardiff picked up a third straight victory with a 1-0 win over Huddersfield courtesy of Famara Diedhiou’s first-half strike.

It was Diedhiou’s first goal in English football since a brace for Bristol City at Middlesbrough in February 2021 and moved Cardiff to within seven points of the play-off places.

Huddersfield remain deep in relegation trouble, just above the bottom three by virtue of having scored more goals than 22nd-placed Stoke.

Watford and Swansea drew 1-1 at Vicarage Road. Ryan Andrews’ own goal put the Welsh side in front but Wesley Hoedt scored after half-time to earn a point for Valerien Ismael’s men.

Southampton‘s match against Preston was postponed after a huge fire broke out close to St Mary’s Stadium just a few hours before kick off.
