Doubting but also delivers, does Cyriel Dessers’ goal alter the transfer state of play?
One way to describe Cyriel Dessers is as Rangers’ problem and solution combined. He’s been the target of jeers and applause, the hero and the villain. After a year in the Ibrox scene, Dessers is still dividing people’s perspectives.
His critics used Saturday’s match at Tynecastle and a couple of wasted opportunities, the most notable of which was a header that struck the woodwork in the second half, as evidence that he isn’t good enough. Tuesday in Lublin, Dessers earned Philippe Clement’s team a draw with Dynamo Kyiv and changed the course of a match that Rangers are now favourites to win, giving his supporters enough ammunition to last them through the next few weeks.
Dessers celebrated the occasion in his customary way. His left hand was tucked into his shorts, and one arm was raised towards the blue-clad group of fans behind the goal. Dessers modelled his pose after Turkish Olympic shooting star Yusuf Dikec, and this goal had all of his coolness and composure.
Dessers is neither as good nor as bad as many would have you believe. He is who he is. He is currently Clement’s best option. In fact, he might be the only one he has.
With time running out and Rangers losing, many fans would have thought it would be a good idea to start Danilo off the bench. The Brazilian might not be as fit or as sharp after a protracted recuperation from knee surgery, but he would have given Rangers a new target to hit and a new foe for Kyiv to contend with. Clement thought otherwise.
Although the Belgian’s trust in Dessers has undoubtedly been put to the test at some trying times, the bank is regarded favourably from both angles. Decisions are what make managers great or bad, and Clement made a wise choice. He remained loyal to Dessers, and his man succeeded.
Vaclav Cerny’s cross was pinpointed. Dessers had a clinical finish. After the game, Clement talked about the nature of his team and how he expects that from them in every practice and game. He mentioned the difference that Cerny and Jefte, who were introduced at halftime, made from the bench and their belief that they could make an impact. Throughout his Rangers career, the player who accomplished that with the last stroke of the game has demonstrated resiliency and spirit.
“I believe Cyril is a major symbol for that today,” Clement remarked. “Because he had some excellent finishes and played a really good game, but the other team had a really good custodian who also represented the Ukrainian national team.” Thus, he persisted in his efforts, never wavering in his convictions, and was present when it mattered most. You want a striker to never give up and to keep going because that is what matters most.
Dessers’s No. 9 jersey can be quite cumbersome to wear. Great power carries a great deal of responsibility. Even though he wasn’t the worst player on the night, Dessers would have received his fair share of criticism if Rangers had lost the first leg.
When he had an early opportunity to capitalise on a rebound from Tom Lawrence’s drive, he might have performed better. Later in the half, a header that was intended to be on either side of custodian Georgii Bushchan was aimed directly at him, resulting in the raising of the offside flag.
As a striker, you have to accept that you may miss opportunities that could change the course of a game or win a match. Dessers scored with the last sight of his target.
Dessers started running from the edge of the area as Cerny shaped to cross wide on the right. Dujon Sterling and Lawrence only advanced as far as the midway point between the six-yard line and the penalty spot, while Jefte maintained his position and Ridvan Yilmaz pulled back.
It was Dessers. Dessers was aware of the space between the centre backs and prevented Taras Mykhavo from getting a head on the cross. When it counted most, he found the finish this time.
This week, exactly one year ago, Dessers scored his first goal in Europe for Rangers in the team’s victory over Servette at Ibrox. After providing two assists against PSV Eindhoven, he did not return to the game until that evening in Seville, where he assisted Abdallah Sima in scoring one of his best goals of the year to help Clement’s team defeat Real Betis.
In all competitions, he scored 22 goals in the future. Dessers can claim that he kept up his end of the bargain in a side that underperformed and underachieved, even though it could and should have been more. Dessers discussed his confidence after reaching that mark in the friendly against Union Berlin last month, as well as the “different feeling” he had going into his second campaign at Ibrox. Although he is not brand-new, he could be better.
Clement responded, “Yes, but also in the league,” when questioned about Dessers’ significant European achievements. “And I see a player who has improved over the last seven months in a lot of areas because he wants to learn. I believe he is currently 29 years old, but he still absorbs all knowledge, and I have only seen him improve over the last few months in a few areas that we worked on, discussed, and trained on. I therefore believe that this season will see a lot more from him and that he will be crucial to the team in that regard.
It was significant that Clement brought up Dessers when questioned about the makeup of his team and then brought up the Nigerian international again in the last query of his press conference following the game. Dessers had the opportunity to accept the love and support of everyone in the dressing room on this particular night.
DESSERS AT THE DEATH! 😱😱
What a moment for Rangers and it’s a massive goal as they take a 1-1 back to Hampden for the second leg! 🔵 pic.twitter.com/6Us8Oe0nGC
— Premier Sports (@PremSportsTV) August 6, 2024
That was made clear when Dessers handled his own press duties following his goal that gave Rangers the advantage going into Hampden. In the past year, not many players on the team have had as much written and spoken about them. This time, the reviews were overwhelmingly positive and the headlines were favourable.Dessers told BBC Scotland, “As a striker you have to believe, even if it is an impossible ball or you don’t think it will fall [to you].” “I was aware that it was the final ball to enter the box in the game, and I was right. Satisfied to be at the finish line of it.
“I’m just doing my job for the team, the manager, and myself; I don’t have to answer to anyone. That is the only thing that is significant. While it would be nice to receive more recognition for your work, the most significant recognition I receive comes from within the building.
“There are always responses from the media or a small portion of the fan base, but the majority of fans showed me a lot of love and support. We all hope that tonight is a lovely one. Although it won’t be simple, we are capable of finishing this tie off and we should at home.”
Dessers will always be flawed and a source of frustration. Clement needs Dessers to keep leading the line even though Danilo and Hamza Igamane are unable to help. Whatever criticisms are levelled at his qualities, they cannot be levelled at his physical and mental toughness.

There were no assurances at the end of the previous season that Dessers would attend the opening European match at Ibrox. The lack of cash on the table following tentative approaches from possible suitors means that Dessers has a good chance of winning the Champions League. Since Clement bears the brunt of this responsibility more than anyone else, he might find satisfaction in a situation where the methods were justified in the end.
When asked if Rangers had reaped the benefits of their aggressive first-leg setup, Clement responded, “Yes, and that’s what I told them, you need players who are brave, players who have balls, who have personality, who want to work really hard for this shirt.” “Players who are willing to put in a lot of effort for the team are the only kind we want in this squad.
“And you will be rewarded for that at the end of the road. We will carry on in that manner, work in that manner, and consistently improve every little detail. Naturally, you won’t improve on the previous game every time you play it. That isn’t feasible, but it must increase over the coming weeks and months to a higher standard than it is at the moment. And based on what I’ve seen in the training sessions and what they demonstrated on the pitch today, I’m extremely confident in that.
Rangers continue to face issues. Clement is still searching for answers. Cheers need to take the place of the boos.
Chris Jack responds, “It’s a bit of a shame,” to what a senior Rangers man said regarding a first-team player
Journalist Chris Jack for Rangers Review thinks it’s unfortunate but also the right move for Ianis Hagi to leave this window.
Throughout the summer, the 25-year-old’s future was unclear, but Philippe Clement provided some clarity by confirming he would soon be leaving.
The Belgian claimed that talks were held at the beginning of the summer with the attacker and his representative and that a decision was made.
On August 5, at 21:04, Jack stated: “I think it’s a bit of a shame, but also the right decision.” His career with the Rangers seems to have slipped away from him. There was always going to be a long road back after that injury a few seasons ago.
The Rangers and Ianis Hagi’s split made perfect sense.
Hagi made the wise decision to leave the Gers during this transfer window, which benefits the team as well as the player.
He was 25 years old and had an uncertain future at Ibrox, especially following a serious injury that would take a long time to heal. This setback has affected his potential for growth and asset value.
Gers can use his availability on the international scene to recover a respectable transfer fee while his performance and potential are still acknowledged, having participated in Euro 2024.
Should Hagi decide to stay and his performance continue to deteriorate or not significantly improve, Rangers’ summer transfer fee would probably be reduced.
Furthermore, Hagi’s exit makes it possible for the team and himself to move on.
Hagi sees it as a chance to move on and pursue new opportunities for professional development.
It frees up money for the Gers to spend on other players who fit better with Clement’s schemes and can contribute more efficiently.
Even though there are strong ties between the star and Rangers, he sent a strong message about his future
Hannibal Mejbri is a name that gives Rangers fans some hope for this transfer window.
The 21-year-old midfielder for Manchester United has been linked with a move to Ibrox ever since he played for United at Murrayfield.
Early news said that a deal to bring Hannibal to Rangers was “advanced,” but it didn’t last long because the midfielder quickly flew to United’s training camp in the USA.
But the rumours came back to life when Italian transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano told Caught Offside that Rangers are “in fact” interested in Hannibal Mejbri this summer.
The thing is, if reports from Tunisia are true, so do Celtic, another team from the Old Firm.
This is another sign that Hannibal Mejbri is not in Erik Ten Hag’s plans for Manchester United this season. The Old Trafford club is now in the United States.
Hannibal doesn’t make it.
The Manchester United pre-season team has had Hannibal Mejbri on it this season.
As we already said, the loan player from Birmingham City and Sevilla played against Rangers in their 2-0 loss in Edinburgh. Mejbri, on the other hand, has been with United on their pre-season tour of the USA.
As the tour came to a close with a game against fierce Premier League rivals Liverpool, Hannibal never got to play a minute in Columbia, South Carolina.
As Arne Slot’s new-look Reds beat Manchester United 3-0, Hannibal’s absence seemed to send a clear message about the midfielder’s place in Erik ten Hag’s team.
We think the midfielder’s last tryout at the club ended in tears now that United is leaving for the UK. This pre-season is his last chance to convince United’s bosses to give him a new deal.
Hannibal Mejbri’s contract with Manchester United ends next summer, and it sounds like they want to get rid of him for good. Rangers fans will be keeping an eye on his situation this summer.
The midfield needs more players for Rangers.
Rangers need to get more players in the middle of the pitch as soon as possible.
After the 0-0 draw with Hearts, Philippe Clement said again how sad it was that they had to let go of John Lundstram this summer.
The midfielder who is going to Trabzonspor played 52 times last season, and Rangers still haven’t found a similar player to replace him this summer.
It’s not likely that Hannibal would take over as Lunny’s leader, but the 21-year-old could give the Rangers more options in the middle of the pitch.
Connor Barron and Mohamed Diomande have been used a lot in pre-season, while Nicolas Raskin is still hurt and can’t play.
Some players, like Kieran Dowell, are still not sure if they should play there, and Rangers have been linked to a number of experienced midfielders this summer.
Kenny McLean from Norwich City, Joan Jordan from Seville, and most recently, Dutch midfielder Marco van Ginkel from Vitesse Arnhem, who was just let go.
Rangers submit bid to sign Goncalo Borges from Porto – report
Record says that Rangers have made an offer for FC Porto forward Goncalo Borges in order to improve their attack.
The Portuguese newspaper said on July 28, 2018 (page 31) that the Gers are one of two teams that have made an offer for the attacker.
However, the report says that other clubs were also interested in signing him, but only Philippe Clement’s team and Strasbourg made “concrete” offers to the club.
Rangers would be very lucky to get Goncalo Borges.
Rangers need to add more attackers this summer more than anything else. Cyriel Dessers scored 22 goals in all competitions last season, but he may soon have to leave to make room for new players.
Borges is better as a winger than a centre back, but the fact that he can play on either wing would help the team.
The young player from Portugal has been a regular for FC Porto and has now played 50 times for the Portuguese giants.
He has only had three assists for the senior team in that time, but he could definitely be made into a better player.
For the past few months, Clement has been very busy. He has made the Gers one of the most changed teams in Europe.
Even though one transfer might not make a big difference, the club would have other options and someone to replace Todd Cantwell, who wants to leave. This is very important for the team this season.
Confirmed: Rangers star player to leaves Ibrox – report
A source told Joao Victor Barcelos that Cruzeiro is about to say that midfielder Jose Cifuentes will be leaving Rangers to join a Greek team.
From TEAMtalk, the Vavel Brazil reporter said on July 26 that the Ecuadorian player would be going on loan to play for Aris Thessaloniki in Greece.
O Tempo broke the news that the 25-year-old was going to join Aris while on loan at Cruzeiro. They will have to let him go now.
On X, Barcelos wrote, “Cruzeiro is about to say that another player is leaving.” This is José Cifuentes, a 25-year-old midfielder who should be going to Greece to play football. Rangers will loan the Ecuadorian player to another team if the deal goes through.
After Jose Cifuentes leaves, Rangers needs to sign another midfielder.
Johnly Yfeko recently left Ibrox on loan, and Cifuentes will be the next player to leave for a short time.
The Ecuadorian player has played his last game for the club, though, because they have to buy him out. Giannis Chorianopoulos is a journalist for Sportime.
It’s important for Gers to get a new midfielder this summer, even though Cifuentes wasn’t really part of their plans for next season.
John Lundstram and Ryan Jack have left, leaving the club with no one to fill the spot. Connor Barron has now joined.
It is known that Philippe Clement wants to sign Sevilla midfielder Joan Jordan, but the deal hasn’t made any big steps forward. [Sports Stadium, July 16]

There is still no word on whether or not Gers will be able to bring in Jordan or another midfielder this summer.
The REAL reason why Rangers asked for Todd Cantwell to be transferred was made public after Philippe Clement’s sudden change of heart
He has been moved to the B team because he is leaving Ibrox this summer.
Philippe Clement quickly went back to his post-match press conference with Rangers to tell everyone about Todd Cantwell’s request to be transferred. He had already talked with Nils Koppen about it.
That’s the idea put forward by Jim Duffy, a commentator who said he was surprised to see the Belgian talk to the media again after the loss to Birmingham City in a friendly. After the preseason game at St. Andrews, the Rangers manager took questions and then left. He later came back to say that the playmaker was looking for a new “adventure” and had been sent to the B team until a way out was found.
And experienced manager Duffy thinks that he had a talk with the head of football recruitment before Clement told everyone the shocking news. The manager of Dundee, Dumbarton, and Ayr United told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, “Maybe he has talked with the director of football and just thought now was the time, or there was a suggestion that the news would get out through different channels.”
“So, we don’t know why Philippe Clement chose to come back, but he was honest with the fans, and I think the fans deserve that.” That player is unhappy, and you don’t think he will be a part of your plans going forward. There is no reason to leave him out of the team and keep everything secret.
Stumped After a “underwhelming” time in the Scottish Premiership, Duffy also thinks Cantwell will find it hard to decide what to do next. “I know he (Philippe Clement) is probably being diplomatic when he says he is looking for a new adventure,” he said. “But if he can get a bigger club than Rangers I would be amazed.”
“He hasn’t really set Rangers on fire with heather.” He has been fine, and he has had some good moments in games, but all in all, I would say he hasn’t been my favourite player.
“I like him, I think he’s talented, but I’m not sure how to fit him into the team. He’s all over the place sometimes.” You can’t count on him as a player. Rangers didn’t lose a lot, in my opinion.
Cantwell is expected to leave Rangers after submitting his second transfer request
Todd Cantwell played his last game for Rangers after submitting a second transfer request.
Ibrox manager Philippe Clement broke the news during his team’s 2-1 pre-season defeat to Birmingham City. The unexpected departure of another key player presents a significant challenge for the Belgian ahead of the new season.
The English midfielder was left out of Clement’s squad for the match against St Andrews, as was defender Connor Goldson, who is now expected to complete his move to Cypriot club Aris Limassol.
After completing his media obligations, Clement returned to explain the Cantwell issue, stating that discussions with the 26-year-old over a previous transfer request had failed to persuade him to remain in Glasgow.
Clement stated: “Todd Cantwell came to my office a bit ago. We have a great connection, and we spent a long time talking about it.
‘He arrived a while ago to say he’s ready for another journey and wants a challenge.
‘I had a long conversation with him because I believe Rangers is a great fit for him.
‘I wanted to give him time, which is why I haven’t spoken about it in the previous few weeks. But he returned with the same request.
‘So I’m going to focus on people who have their heads with the Rangers over the next several weeks.’
Cantwell will no longer practice with the first team as he seeks a way out of Ibrox. Over the summer, the former Norwich City striker made a series of mysterious social media statements and even got into a heated argument with a fan.
Goldson’s exit moved a step closer yesterday night when Clement stated the club had received a ‘solid offer’.
The 31-year-old defender was in Cyprus over the weekend for negotiations over a move to Aris Limassol, with the Ibrox club needing to sell before buying in the summer.
Clement was asked about the issue on Rangers TV ahead to yesterday night’s friendly, and he revealed: “Connor was supposed to start today, that was the plan.” But there is a definite offer for him, so I let him go talk with this team.
‘That’s why I let him depart today. We’ll see in the following several days.
Rangers are still in negotiations with Trabzonspor over captain James Tavernier’s departure, while Sam Lammers is close to joining FC Twente for £2 million.
Last night, reports from Germany connected Czech winger Vaclav Cerny with a loan transfer to Rangers from Wolfsburg.
In Tuesday night’s friendly at St Andrews, Birmingham lead after nine minutes thanks to a Tavernier own goal from a dangerous corner. In a disappointing first half for Rangers, Alfie May extended the hosts’ advantage after 37 minutes.
In the 68th minute, winger Scott Wright equalised for Clement’s side, who were cheered on by 7,000 travelling fans.

‘Sorry for Clement,’ Pundit reacts upon learning that the ‘Bang-Average’ Rangers player has been placed in reserve
Derek Ferguson is sorry for Philippe Clement; the Rangers manager has far too many players that don’t have anything left in them.
Sam Lammers was kept in the B Team during the preseason as the team attempted to let him go [Rangers Review, July 8]. However, he is returning to the Eredivisie, where he excelled when on loan the previous season, but his contract at Ibrox prevented him from staying [AD Voetbal podcast, July 15].
He’s one of several players the team hopes to let go of, along with a few who signed last summer but didn’t work out.
Ferguson can’t help but compare Clement’s current sell-to-buy struggles to the money Michael Beale had to spend a year ago on “bang-average” players.
He expressed his sympathy to Ibrox News exclusively, saying, “I feel bad for Clement because he has a number of players that, in my opinion, it’s obvious they won’t be part of his plans.
That explains why Sam Lammers is a member of the B Team.
“He also brought a few players [who won’t play] for the few games [in the Netherlands], so he just needs to make do with what he has.
“If you look back to the previous season, under Michael Beale’s leadership, with the financial resources at his disposal, you’ll see the players he brought in who he believed could succeed.

As it turned out, the most of them were mediocre at best.
“Clement has a very difficult task ahead of him.”
Michael Beale bought Sam Lammers last summer but was sacked by Rangers early in the season
After just one season, Cyriel Dessers can also be sold by Rangers.
It is quite irritating to see Lammers lingering in the reserves after he showed he was nothing like the player he was meant to be at Ibrox [Rangers Review, 29 May]. His intriguing loan to FC Utrecht appeared to have salvaged the situation.
Despite having much more production than the Dutchman last season [Rangers Review, 3 July], Cyriel Dessers is also open to a move and has received a lot of attention. However, a deal has not yet been finalised.
Jose Cifuentes is a third signing from a year ago who refused to settle because Beale was fired due to his haul, and Clement may make due with the Englishman’s limited cash.
He may conclude the new season worse off than how he started the previous one, so he will need to hope that the impending action on James Tavernier and others gets the window moving again.
Top Rangers star recently rated at £30 million
The most recent name added to a senior Rangers cull this transfer window is Connor Goldson.
For the most part, the 31-year-old centre back has been a reliable choice for no fewer than four managers, having dedicated the latter six years of his career to the Gers.
But Connor Goldson is just one of several players in the senior leadership group who have been the target of harsh criticism from the fans following yet another season of domestic disappointment.
The former Brighton centre half is reportedly on his way out of Ibrox and is currently receiving medical attention in Cyprus.
Here is the most recent information about the Rangers defender.
Connor: Farewell soon?
Pictures of the Rangers defender departing Prestwick Airport on a private plane went viral online, sparking rumours about Goldson’s future.
These then got more intense as internet detectives figured out the jet was headed to Larnaca, Cyprus.

The Russian-funded team is rumoured to be searching for an experienced centre back after playing Rangers in the Europa League the previous season.
According to Cypriot publication Super Sport FM, Aris seems to have discovered their “chosen one” in Rangers defender Goldson.
They are joined by Kerkida, who state that Aris and Rangers are “talking” about the former Shrewsbury centre defender.
Rangers have Connor Goldson under contract through 2026, and he might fetch a premium.
Since the centre back is now Rangers’ best paid player, at least according to Salary Sport, Rangers could also reduce their pay expenditure by £37k per week, or over £2 million per season.
The departure also occurs weeks after former Aberdeen manager Kieth Wyness made the odd assertion Rangers might get close to £30 million for the reliable defender.
I think we could throw in Tav, cantwell, dessers, dowell, Lawrence and wright for that 🤭
— gazza’s blonde hair (@liamhannah1987) July 4, 2024
Rangers won’t likely ask for such a high price, but they should be able to entice the Ibrox team with a bid of between £1 and £2 million.
The Rangers’ transfer window is still open.
This summer’s departure of Connor Goldson from Rangers would further mark the end of an era for the team.
The defender, who spent six seasons playing over 300 games for Rangers, was a pillar of the Ibrox defence and will be well-known for his devotion to the Ibrox cause.
With Goldson and his colleagues likely to leave with a Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup, League Cup, and runners-up medal in the Europa League, supporters will be fixated on their accomplishments as the years go by.
But even though Goldson and the seasoned Rangers leadership group came agonisingly close to ending Celtic’s hegemony, they have now finished second best for the last time.
Borna Barisic and John Lundstram have already left for Trabzonspor, with Borna’s remarks this week regarding a post-Gerrard rot only serving to validate their departures.
Perennial misfits Ryan Jack and Kemar Roofe have joined them, and their ongoing injury problems have had a severe negative effect on the team.
The Rangers are poised to let go of four players, including Connor Goldson, as they move into the second phase of a sluggish transfer window.
Rangers player rejects Ibrox exit; conversations confirmed by manager who wants him
Rangers outcast Sam Lammers declined a move to NEC Nijmegen, according to The Scottish Sun.
The newspaper said on its website [21 July] that, despite manager Rogier Meijer’s interest in the Dutch striker this summer, Lammers has decided not to leave Ibrox for the Eredivisie club.
Lammers was expected to be one of the first players to go after his remarkable six-month loan spell with FC Utrecht, but he has decided to stay put for the time being.
Sam Lammers rejects an Ibrox escape as Rangers transfer discussions emerge.
After failing to strike the ground running at Ibrox, scoring only twice in 31 appearances, he elected to spend the second part of the season on loan in the Netherlands.
He scored 11 goals in 20 games, attracting interest from a number of clubs, including Nijmegen, who are certainly interested in signing him this summer.
According to the Daily Record, Utrecht are willing to match the Gers’ £2.7 million asking price for the 27-year-old, but his salary is a concern.
Lammers has a chance to stay in Scotland and compete for a spot in the team, despite continued doubts over Cyriel Dessers’ availability.
With Danilo out for much of last season, the Nigerian striker was Clement’s only viable option at Ibrox, and he continued to disappoint with his all-round performance.
Sam Lammers has rejected a Rangers exit
Clement hoped that bringing Fabio Silva on loan from Wolves would relieve some of Dessers’ goalscoring strain, but despite scoring over 20 goals in his first season, fans remain sceptical.
It will be an intriguing tale to follow this summer to see if Lammers is looking for a better offer elsewhere or if he is willing to stay at Ibrox and battle for his club.
Four boys talk about the Rangers “rumours” that they have heard at Ibrox today
According to Four Lads, Hamza Igamane has not suffered an injury that will prevent him from playing for Rangers for four months.
On July 19, a news outlet and fan podcast reported on their own X account that the summer signing may have suffered an injury.
But they soon put those fears to rest by revealing that they had approached the club about it and were told that it was “not true”.
Rangers’ injury curse should not strike again.
The injury problems at Ibrox last season were absurd, and Philippe Clement has already moved to attempt to fix them.
The manager stated that behind-the-scenes additions were made this summer to bolster the medical department [Rangers Review, 15 July]. While there are some knocks in the team today, they are not significant.
That must continue for the rest of the season if Rangers are serious about catching Celtic and reclaiming the title, because no one can compete at the greatest level if they are struggling to fill out a complete roster.
Hamza Igamane rumours today

‘Not true’ pic.twitter.com/ee2nkt1yjW
— Four Lads Had A Dream (@4ladshadadream) July 19, 2024
Igamane hasn’t even put on the Rangers uniform yet, so it would be a tremendous shock and surprise if he were injured, especially significantly, but happily that isn’t the case.
The 21-year-old Moroccan will need all of the time he can get in pre-season to adapt and learn so that he can start making an impression on the first squad right away.
Rangers get a second opportunity following a £4 million hint to sign the winger who destroyed Celtic
Philippe Clement is working tirelessly with Nils Koppen to bring new and improved players to Rangers.
The manager recognises the need to move bodies from Ibrox, but believes that new recruits can still be lined up.
Rangers’ pre-season friendlies revealed a significant lack of quality on the wings, indicating a need for improvement.
Rangers up against it as Philippe Clement seeks quality.
The Gers boss expressed optimism about Abdallah Sima’s potential return to Glasgow.
Both the player and the Rangers want to make the move.
Finances were always going to be a factor in any potential deal, but with only a year remaining on his contract, Brighton shouldn’t be too difficult to work with.
With 11 goals in 24 Premier League games, it’s easy to see why Clement would want to recruit someone who has demonstrated their abilities, even if their injury history is cause for concern.
However, the manager has made it clear that there is no blank cheque or magic wand that can be waved:
“That’s the reality that the board told me a few months back. I know this, as does the recruitment team.
“This is the reality of the club.” I had different expectations when I arrived in October. But I now understand the reality. I am eager to contribute to the club’s development.
In short, he has to get creative.
Bosman deals are one way to minimise costs, another is by searching for players who are out of favour at their parent clubs.
Michael Beale had a bad habit of signing individuals who hadn’t shown any form for years or who had injury problems, gambling that he could get the best out of them and keep them hit.
He lost his job because he failed on both counts.
Rangers should have cut-price winger move lined up
One player Clement should consider is a familiar name to Rangers fans – Ola Solbakken.
Linked in the past, the 6ft 1inch tall winger was prolific at Bodo/Glimt and tore Celtic apart both at home and abroad in the Europa Conference League.
His pace, dribbling strength and ingenuity was too much to handle and why Steven Gerrard didn’t strive to land the Norway international on a Bosman is surprising to say the least.
Now 24-years old, Solbakken is struggling with Roma in Serie A and has been unable to produce the sort of numbers that saw him rise to prominence.
Two loan appearances last season at Olympiakos – where there was a £4m option to buy clause – and then to Japan with Urawa Reds proved unsuccessful.
Italian media outlet La Repubblica has alleged that Solbakken has been judged surplus to requirements with Malmo having been priced out owing to pay demands despite the player preferring to stay in Serie A.
Malmo having signed his former Bodo/Glimt teammate Erik Botheim, another linked to Rangers, with the striker on fire at the Swedes.
Clement missed out on a cut-price move for Botheim, however, the possibility to sign Solbakken wouldn’t break the bank either and it is one that should be investigated.
One guarantee if he chooses Ibrox over Parkhead is a Celtic transfer target marked on a Rangers box ticker
Celts have also been connected with a movement similar to that of the elite Rangers.
Tommy Conway is the kind of player Ibrox officials are looking for, a former Rangers star says, and he would be a great addition.
Claimed to be interested in the forward who visited Euro 2024 with Scotland this summer are both the Light Blues and Premiership winners Celtic. Some have floated a pre-contract swoop by both as it would only need a cost as low as £300k in cross-border compensation.
Derek Ferguson believes Philippe Clement could be a boss who could maximise the already shown potential of Conway. With twelve of those strikes coming last campaign, he has scored 25 goals and six assists in 92 games total among the interest from Rangers and Celtic.
Among swoops for younger-profile players like Jefte, Oscar Cortes, Clinton Nsiala, Connor Barron, and Hamza Igamane, the ex-midfielder notes that the gaffer would be nailed on to improve him and therefore maybe benefit Rangers. Ferguson informed Ibrox News: “Yeah, he’s a good player; isn’t he the lad?”
“He’s 21; he ticks all the boxes in terms of what Rangers [are looking for], how their recruitment is going. I’m not sure exactly what the cost would be.” Younger guys, bring them in, improve them, then might we sell them on?
“Listen, he’s a gifted youngster in the Scotland Under-21s; you don’t make the Euros if you’re not a decent player so what you can see is there’s a lot to work with there and a lot to improve. I believe our present manager would do it.
Rangers give Glen Kamara a windfall as the Leeds United player revealed his £8.6 million departure
Only last summer did the former Dundee midfielder move from Ibrox to Elland Road.
Glen Kamara’s £8.6 million move to Rennes has reportedly brought Rangers a six-figure windfall.
Last summer, the 28-year-old Finland international moved from Ibrox to Elland Road for £5 million. And even though the former Dundee star made a name for himself as a vital player in his Whites debut, he has made the decision to take on a new challenge in Ligue 1.According to the Daily Record, Gers added a sell-on option to the agreement that sent Kamara to the English Championship, allowing them to keep a portion of the money.
Earlier tonight, Kamara thanked Leeds supporters on Instagram for their support during his brief but memorable tenure with Daniel Farke’s team.
He wrote: “I want to use this chance to express my gratitude to @leedsunited for giving me the opportunity to represent this incredible club.” Although the journey was brief, it is undoubtedly one I will never forget. I send my best wishes to the staff, my teammates, and the fans, of course.”
Gers manager Philippe Clement, who acknowledged earlier this week that he must sell before he can acquire any more players this summer, will be encouraged by the news. The Light Blues will have to temporarily relocate to Hampden Park as a result of Ibrox renovations that are taking longer than expected to complete.
Clement seems uninterested looking at Rangers star in the eye following an apparent departure request on Instagram
Numerous Rangers headlines have already mentioned Todd Cantwell and Philippe Clement’s friendship.
At his peak, Todd Cantwell—who was signed by Michael Beale in January 2023—ranked among the most technically proficient and accomplished players the Rangers have had in recent memory.
Cantwell is an attacking midfielder with creativity and boldness who can score incredible goals. He was once on the verge of joining Bayern Munich.
However, Cantwell’s career has been beset by problems with attitude and application; his tenure at Ibrox was also negatively impacted by the midfielder’s frequently conceited attitude.
Since hooking the player in the first half of last season’s Europa League match against Aris Limassol, Philippe Clement has not participated in any games.
Fans of Rangers, one of whom Cantwell called a “weapon” during the preseason, have also grown weary of the midfielder’s methods.
The news that Clement has sat down the midfield player will raise heads at Ibrox, since the 26-year-old has not been seen since this summer. There have also been rumours that Cantwell wants to leave Rangers.
Clement divulges reveal squad discussions.
Although Todd Cantwell has been the subject of a lot of leave rumours this summer, the Rangers star travelled to the Netherlands with the team for their training camp.
The Rangers manager has now disclosed that he has used the Dutch camp as an opportunity to conduct in-depth one-on-one conversations with each and every player on his team.
Even though up to seven players have been connected to the Rangers exodus, we would most like to have been a fly on the wall during the conversation with Todd Cantwell.

According to Clement, RangersTV, “it was also important with all the players, all 30 that were here, individual talks during this week.”
“This week has been quite busy. For the staff, this meant that we had these one-on-one conversations practically every evening from seven 7:30 am to eleven or twelve pm.
Regarding the significance of the discussions, Clement responded, “It’s imperative.” Okay, the folks I knew for the previous seven months, most of them.
However, the purpose is to clarify everything and discuss working aspects. It’s also to talk about their positive aspects and all we anticipate from them this season.
It converses in both directions. at order to improve things at the club, with them, and with the group, we now have a better understanding of what goes on within the team and with the players.
Cantwell is absent from the Rangers roster.
It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what Philippe Clement and Todd Cantwell discussed during the training camp.
However, the absence of the midfield player from both the Ajax and Standard Liege friendlies has brought attention to the matter.
In response to a question concerning the absence, Clement stated that the player is unable to play because of “small things.”
Although the Belgian manager may have been discussing injuries, there has been conjecture that Clement was referring to anything more.
The player’s future is still unknown when you consider that Cantwell’s agency has offered him a contract with Serie A team Lecce and that former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has offered the Rangers star an Instagram fan account.
We believe that Todd Cantwell is an indisputable asset to Rangers Football Club when he is completely focused.
At his worst, though, the midfielder exudes an air of unwanted attention, so whatever transpires this summer needs to be best for the Gers.
