‘He’s a master’ – Pep Guardiola thinks reported Spurs target is ‘one of the best’ he has ever seen

Pep Guardiola has showered Ivan Toney with praise, admitting that he has not seen many strikers in the world who are as good as the rumoured Tottenham target in using their bodies to shield the ball.

Since returning from his ban last month, Toney has reminded everyone just how good he is, with the centre-forward having found the back of the net four times in six matches (Transfermarkt).

Earlier this month, Football Insider reported that Tottenham are intent on signing a marquee number nine to fill Harry Kane’s shoes next summer, with the Bees star said to be one of the players on their radar.

A couple of weeks ago, HITC also named Spurs as one of the clubs lining up a summer move for the 27-year-old, who is thought to be valued at around £50m-£60m.

The report claimed that the Lilywhites have been joined in the race for the England international by Manchester United, Arsenal, Newcastle United and Chelsea, with the striker now unlikely to extend his current deal at the Gtech Community Stadium, which runs out in 2025.

Pep Guardiola has now admitted that he is a big fan of Toney, earmarking him as a danger ahead of his side’s clash against Brentford earlier this week, which the Premier League champions won 1-0.

The City boss said about the striker in his pre-match press conference (via One Football): “He is so dangerous. He’s a master to use his body for the second ball, good finishing, you can link with him – he’s one of the best I’ve ever seen [at that].

“A few weeks ago the goal we conceded [to him] we defended not properly but he did it really well.”

There are not too many world-class number nines around at the moment but Toney is certainly one of those, with the Brentford star being one of the few players who guarantees 20 goals in the Premier League.

There will be a major scramble for his signature and I suspect that he will end up joining Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta’s men desperately in need of a top centre-forward.
