‘I see a chance’: Former MLS manager believes he is perfect to take over at Inter Miami
Inter Miami’s 2024 season is over, and with it has come a surprise search for a new manager to replace Tata Martino.
The Argentine coach left his position with the Herons due to personal reasons after Inter Miami crashed out of the play-offs at the first round to Atlanta United, with Martino’s side viewed as the favorites for MLS Cup.
Although Inter Miami have been linked with the likes of Xavi Hernandez, Argentina U-23 manager Javier Mascherano looks set to take over at Chase Stadium, with the former FC Barcelona midfielder set to reunite with Lionel Messi and friends.
Yet one former MLS manager now thinks he should be in the conversation for the Inter Miami job.
Giovanni Savarese throws his name out into Inter Miami manager debate
Speaking to Alfredo Di Cesare, former Portland Timbers manager Giovanni Savarese threw his name out there as a potential candidate for the Inter Miami job, with the former MLS coach highly regarded in America.
Savarese said: “I know MLS very well. It will depend on the idea of the club and the players. I feel that I have many things that meet the checklist to be able to be a coach for that team. There is a Latin base that would help by having a Latin coach or one who knows how to speak Spanish.
“You need a person who knows the league well because I think they have to understand how it works in order to prepare a complete championship well like Tata Martino did, it has to be a coach who has known how to manage high-level players because it is not easy.
“They will push you to the top of your ability. I was lucky enough to train several high-level players such as Raul, Marcos Senna, Juan Arango. I feel that I can be a person with an interesting profile for the club. I see a chance of being a candidate to at least go through the interview process.”
Mascherano is still the best pick for Inter Miami despite Savarese comments
A two-time MLS Cup finalist and a coach who is often linked with vacant MLS positions, it makes sense why Savarese has thrown his own name into the ring as a potential successor for Martino and Inter Miami.
However, given Mascherano’s history with the likes of Messi and how big a name the former Argentine international is despite his relative inexperience compared to Savarese, the former Barcelona man is still the best pick for Inter Miami as their next manager.
Indeed, Mascherano’s appointment will be an exciting one for Inter Miami, and fans will be keen to see how the young coach manages to get the best out of Messi, Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets from the touchline.
