‘Irritating. Poor. Insignificant’ – Keys & Gray destroy Everton flop live today

Richard Keys and Andy Grey piled in on Neal Maupay as the most “irritating” player in the Premier League at Brentford after his struggles at Everton.

The beIN Sports pair took aim at the French forward live on the broadcaster’s Premier League coverage on 17 February, before the Bees were hammered 4-1 at home to Liverpool.

Both took major issue with the 27-year-old’s behaviour being unacceptable when he was so “insignificant” at Goodison Park before his loan back to West London this season.

Kyle Walker, Cristian Romero and James Maddison have all been involved in confrontations with the top flight’s “premier wind-up merchant” this term [Evening Standard, 16 February].

Keys said: “Is there a more irritating player in the Premier League right now, with little to back up his antics, than Neal Maupay?”

“No. No. No,” Gray replied, “I knew you were going to say that. No there isn’t, there isn’t. When you think of how poor he was at Everton, and how insignificant he was at Everton, he’s got an awful lot to say for himself at the moment.

But maybe that’s his character, I don’t know.”

Maupay hammered over Everton failings then loses to Liverpool

It is well known that being infuriating is indeed part of Maupay’s character, on the pitch at least, and was arguably part of why he was effective at Brighton, and why he has rebounded somewhat back at Brentford.

If anything, the fact that he seemed to be lacking that side during a season of struggle at Goodison Park last term was part of what made him look so lost as a Toffees player.

The deal that brought him to the club from the Amex under Frank Lampard was already looking like it might have been a mistake before the former manager was replaced by Sean Dyche to render his position in the squad virtually redundant.

One goal in 32 Everton games is a measure of how badly the deal worked out, and it may well be that his struggles on Merseyside did cause him to lose the attitude he needed to come good.

Keys and Gray have clearly got upset about it but seven goals in 19 Brentford games this season would seem to tie up with him feeling more confident, which apparently manifests winding up opponents with it.

He was never the number nine replacement for Dominic Calvert-Lewin he was primarily used as at Everton, and with Beto and Youssef Chermiti since coming in it is surely going to be best for all parties if a permanent arrangement can be worked out with Brentford in the summer
