The Detroit Lions won a spectacular 23-20 Thanksgiving Day over the Chicago Bears, but much postgame discussion focused on a moment of hard-nosed play and the tactic behind it.

Hosted by Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and his brother Equanimeous, an edition of The St. Brown Podcast on Wednesday revealed head coach Dan Campbell’s ferocious directions to his players on Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.

Often using the sideline as a safety net, Williams—known for his creative playmaking—feigns out-of-bounds runs to lengthen plays. St. Brown claims Campbell sent a clear message to his squad getting ready for the elusive quarterback.

“He goes, ‘If he does this, we’re going to hit his (expletive),” St. Brown recounted, remembering Campbell’s comments during movie study. “I already alerted the refs; they know.”

The game itself had a pivotal moment when Lions defender Jack Campbell gave Williams a vicious, low hit as the quarterback danced along the sideline.

Williams bowed uncomfortably in the impact, momentarily startled but able to carry on. The drama elicited strong responses; Lions players defended their actions while Bears players demanded a penalty.

St. Brown, addressing the debate, remarked, “everyone on the Bears were like, ‘What the (expletive), where’s the flag?'” “We’re like, bro, he came out then came back in.”

Although some called the hit dirty, others faulted Williams for encouraging contact by performing an out-of-bounds action before regressing into the field of play.

Extending their winning run to 10 games, the drama perfectly captured the gritty tone Dan Campbell’s Lions have adopted throughout their league-leading 11-1 season.

Moments like this show Williams’s bold approach as well as the hazards involved as the Bears negotiate a 4-8 season. Under Campbell’s strict direction, the Lions are proving themselves as among the NFC’s toughest teams.

The way Jared Goff treated Tim Patrick following TD gained QB more respect

In the Lions’ Week 14 triumph over the Packers, veteran receiver Tim Patrick became an improbable hero.

On Thursday Night Football in Week 14, the Detroit Lions played the Green Bay Packers; Matt LaFeur had some harsh words for a fan before kickoff, which set the tone of the NFC North grudge match. The two teams swapped touchdowns in a high-scoring contest and an unusual hero surfaced when the action shifted to the pitch.

Late in the third quarter, veteran wideout Tim Patrick snatched a three-yard touchdown ball from Jared Goff to give the Lions a 24-21 lead. Based on NFL official X, Patrick’s first touchdown since 2021 was And Goff made extra effort to present his recipient with the ball to mark the success.

Amazingly, Patrick continued beyond that. Halfway through the fourth quarter, the eighth-year pro grabbed another short touchdown catch from Goff to provide Detroit a 31-28 lead. NFL insider Tom Pelissero said Patrick had gone 1,082 days without scoring a touchdown. He nabbed two touchdowns on Thursday night, compiling six grabs for 43 yards.

For Patrick, it has been a protracted, horrific trip back to the end zone. Following his 2017 entry into the league as an undrafted free agent, the wideout hooked onto the Denver Broncos. With the squad in 2020 and 2021 he recorded back-to-back excellent seasons and seemed ready to remain a major component of the offence for years to come.

But a slew of ailments threw off his otherwise bright career. Before the 2022 season, Patrick tore his ACL and stayed out all year long. Working his way back, he sustained a ruptured Achilles during the 2023 preseason, which resulted in a second consecutive full year of football missed.

Denver was ready to move on; Patrick was resolved to recover in 2024. The Broncos dismissed Patrick in August following an effort at trading the 31-year-old WR.

He came upon the Lions’ practice squad before being signed to the regular roster. Patrick has 27 catches for 349 across 12 games with Detroit, including at last two touchdowns. With a 34-31 triumph over the Packers in Week 14, he guided the Lions towards their 12th seasonal victory.
