NFL expresses thanks to Congress for RFK Stadium “breakthrough”
The Senate opened the door to the Commanders’ eventual return to Washington, D.C. early this morning. More subsequently, the NFL expressed gratitude for the key bargaining point in the team’s desire for a new stadium.
“We appreciate the bipartisan group of Congressional leaders who made this important breakthrough possible,” a league representative stated, according to Ben Standig of TheAthletic. “Washington D.C. will now have a long-overdue seat at the table when it comes to the location of a new Commanders stadium.”
That’s a not-so-subtle nod to the fact that it’s all about choices. And from those alternatives comes the arrangement that provides the greatest free money to the league and the Commanders.
It’s the most important element that has been overlooked in the back-and-forth between Elon Musk and others who have fact-checked his assertion that the present law requires government funds. Eventually, the NFL and the Commanders will want someone else to pay for at least a significant portion of their efforts.
Even if the D.C. offer does not include any government money, having D.C. on board will increase the likelihood that the other possible destinations — Maryland and Virginia — will begin coughing up the cash.
