Philippe Clement Rangers future is No. 1 on AGM agenda as Monday Jury names strongest Celtic Xi
Celtic flexed their muscles by making six changes and still romping to victory. But what is their’ strongest starting XI?
KEITH JACKSON: Rodgers has now got exactly what he demanded from the start – quality options for almost every position. As a result, he’s now able to make changes without risking a drop off in quality. The champions are in great nick.
MICHAEL GANNON: It’s a happy headache for Rodgers. It’s probably the Club Brugge line up with Paulo Bernardo getting a shot in place of Arne Engels. Alex Valle and Luke McCowan are banging on the door too.
SCOTT BURNS: Schmeichel, Johnston, Carter-Vickers, Trusty, Taylor, McGregor, Hatate, Engels, Kuhn, Kyogo, Maeda.
ANDY NEWPORT: On current form you have to say it’s pretty much the one that started against Brugge in midweek, with only Paulo Bernardo taking the place of £11m man Arne Engels – Schmeichel, Johnston, Carter-Vickers, Trusty, Taylor, McGregor, Hatate, Bernardo, Khun, Maeda, Kyogo.
What are the big questions for the Rangers AGM this week?
KEITH: It should be a feisty one as patience is thin on the ground. No.1 on the agenda has to be the immediate future of manager Philippe Clement and will he see out the month of December if he suffers another Old Firm beating in the League Cup Final.
MICHAEL: There are quite a few, like what is the future for Philippe Clement if he loses the League Cup Final? What will the budget be for January? How will the club bridge the financial gap with Celtic? How and when will the club stop relying on director handouts? Why were nine players allowed to leave in the summer for buttons? The list goes on and on…
SCOTT: The big one should be whether or not there will be money to spend in January. They need investment because they are well behind Celtic and Aberdeen.
ANDY: Ha! Where do you start? The shareholders will demand answers on a range of hot subjects including this season’s stadium construction cock-up, recruitment on and off the park and the future of boss Philippe Clement. Whether they get the response they are looking for is another matter entirely.
Is David Gray finally turning a corner at Hibs or is he still on borrowed time?
KEITH: Saturday’s win at Motherwell was the strongest performance of the season and it came on the back of a spirited comeback against Aberdeen.
It does feel as if Gray is getting a response from his dressing room at a critical moment. But he’s not out of the woods yet.
MICHAEL: It was a huge win at the weekend but it’s not going to get any easier. They’ve got Celtic, Aberdeen and Hearts on the horizon and he’ll need to get some decent results to have any hope of a happy New Year.
SCOTT: I wouldn’t think so. It is a start, nothing more. He now has to drag Hibs out of the relegation fight or the axe will continue to hover.
ANDY: It’s a decent start but he’s got a long way to go if Hibs are to avoid a repeat of their 2014 collapse. He simply has to get his January recruitment right too.
Kilmarnock are still struggling to build momentum. Is another top six finish already beyond them?
KEITH: Write Derek McInness off at your peril. It’s been a bit of a struggle so far this season but they’re still only a couple of wins away from the top half. Expect them to hit their stride over the next couple of months.
MICHAEL: Not yet. The five point gap isn’t great but Kilmarnock have a decent squad and experienced manager, so you wouldn’t put it past them putting together some kind of run and being in the mix heading towards the split.
SCOTT: No, they are only five points off it. I wouldn’t bet against Derek McInnes’s side going on an unbeaten run.
ANDY: They’re only five points off the top half so you simply can’t write them off. But what appeared to be a hangover from their Euro exertions is now starting to look like a bigger issue for Derek McInnes’s side. Again, January will be key to where they end up.
