‘Really harsh’: Stephen McGinn says Celtic have a B team player who is much better than Alexandro Bernabei
Pundit, Stephen McGinn, has said that Celtic have a youth player who he believes is much better than Alexandro Bernabei.
The Argentine defender has really struggled in Glasgow since his move from Lanus in June 2022. And after just 28 first-team appearances in the green and white hoops, it seems that Bernabei is set to leave the club after yesterday’s transfer update.
So if the 23-year-old does finalise his move to Brazilian side Sport Club Internacional, that would leave Celtic really short in that left-back position with Greg Taylor as our only recognised first-team full-back.
Not unless Brendan Rodgers takes a wee look at the Celtic B team because there is one player that could easily offer that badly-needed cover who is just waiting in the wings. That’s according to McGinn.
McGinn said [The Go Radio Football Show], “I’m, probably, happy that he is going. When I look at Alexandro Bernabei, and this seems really harsh, but I looked at what they scout in terms of a left back and you look at, first of all, the size.
“Immediately you point to the size and think he’s very, very small for a defender. Then you think he must be really talented on the ball.
“He’s very inconsistent on the ball. Sometimes he has a good cross, sometimes he doesn’t. The games he’s just played for Celtic the ball breaks down with him in possession quite a lot.
“He’s quick but he’s not super quick. He can’t defend his back post, he’s not good in the air as we’ve seen with the goal he lost recently.
“Within the building, you look at guys like Mitchel Frame, he must have attributes better suited to play for Celtic?
“And I think with him going, I don’t expect him to play between now and the end of the season. I expect Anthony Ralston, or Mitchel Frame or Liam Scales to be used for cover.”
I’m with McGinn on this one. Whilst I recognise that Bernabei has had a difficult time trying to get himself into the Celtic first-team due to the form of Taylor, when the opportunity has arisen, he’s failed to make it count.
Young Frame, on the other hand, has the potential to become a very good player for Celtic. Thrown in for a debut in the Champions League win against Feyenoord, the 18-year-old defender earned rave reviews as he didn’t look out of place in Europe’s top competition.
However, he hasn’t featured since and with the imminent departure of Bernabei on the cards, hopefully, his chance will come again before the end of the season.
With Rodgers giving the likes of young Daniel Kelly and Rocco Vata an opportunity this season, the Celtic fans will be hoping that this is the beginning of the club’s intentions to start bedding in some of our best talents in Lennoxtown to the Celtic first team.
