REPORT: I went broke even though I made $70 million in the NFL because I wasted $9 million on Whataburger, Jason Bell discussed…
“I went bankrupt even though I made $70 million in the NFL because I wasted $9 million on Whataburger,” Jason Bell said.
In a shocking interview, former NFL player Jason Bell talked about how he went broke even though he made over $70 million during his career. Many people might expect a warning tale about expensive homes, cars, or risky investments, but Bell’s downfall was caused by something much stranger: his crazy love for Whataburger, the famous fast food chain from Texas.
As an NFL CB, Bell was known for his lightning-fast speed and hard-hitting style. In a recent podcast interview, he admitted that his spending problems were caused by his undying love for Whataburger. What began as a simple liking for the chain’s famous burgers and shakes quickly turned into a multimillion-dollar passion.
“To be honest, it all began in a harmless way,” Bell says. “Whataburger was a normal part of life in Texas where I lived.” I’d get it every day, after every game. I quickly came to the realisation, “Hey, I could afford this.” I bought T-shirts, hats, and anything else I could get my hands on that said “Whataburger.” I felt like a VIP and part of the brand.
That being said, Bell’s laziness got a lot worse over the years. He thinks he spent a crazy $9 million on Whataburger over the course of several years, on both the food and a huge collection of weird themed items. He would fly in executives from Whataburger to cater private events, buy cars with Whataburger themes, and even throw huge parties where the chain was the main draw.
“It was a mix of things,” Bell says, feeling a little embarrassed. “It was the ease of use, the memories, and the truth be told, the feeling that I could have anything I wanted.” But now that I think about it, I was totally out of control. Being successful in sports gave me everything I could want, but I wasn’t looking at the big picture.
Bell’s funds started to fall apart as he spent more and more. Living a fancy life and spending money without thinking about it meant he didn’t have much saved, and by the end of his playing career, he was broke.
Bell thinks, “It wasn’t just the money I spent on Whataburger.” The bigger problem was that they didn’t have a plan for their money. I didn’t have anyone to help me make better choices, and it’s easy to think you’ll always have money when you’re making a lot of it.
Now that he is a coach, Bell uses his knowledge to help young players not only with football but also with money matters and making decisions in life. As the head coach of a high school football team, Bell tells his players about the mistakes he made in the past to help them avoid making the same ones.
“It’s to teach them how valuable money is, how important it is to save, and how to live a good life without letting pleasure take over.” I’ve made mistakes, but now I can help other people avoid them.
It’s humbling to hear Bell’s story because it shows that money management is just as important off the pitch as it is on it, and sometimes it takes a huge mistake to fix things. His message is clear: it’s not just about how much money you can make, but also about how much you can save and build for the future.
