Report: The Washington Commanders are reintroducing the previous logo, but not the Redskins name

Numerous stories have lately been written regarding the Washington Commanders’ new ownership reviving the team’s famous emblem and previous moniker, the Redskins. It’s allegedly a no-go for both the team and the NFL, as they have stated time and time again that their previous name would not return. They haven’t ruled out changing the Commanders’ name again, but they are still discussing other concerns that should be addressed first.

A new stadium is one of those goals, and the name/logo controversy has returned to the public eye due to the possible return to the location of RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. Sen. Steve Daines of Montana delayed a committee vote to give D.C. control over federally owned land so that officials might collaborate with the Commanders to construct a new stadium. Working with the Wetzel family, he advocated for the previous emblem to be respected. At the stadium and elsewhere, Josh Harris paid tribute to Walter “Blackie” Wetzel, the man who created the emblem.

Although the Maryland delegation is opposing the bill, which has already advanced to the full Senate, the emblem is apparently returning for a few restricted usage. By the end of the month, the team will begin selling alumni jerseys, according to A.J. Perez of Front Office Sports.

In combination with another revamp, the team has “no appetite” to reinstate the previous logo as the official one. When the logo controversy erupted again, there were rumors that this would happen, but a team representative said the new ownership group had no intentions to pursue it.

Alumni shirts that go on sale before the end of the month are anticipated to use the Washington Commanders’ contentious previous emblem, which depicts a Native American figure in profile with trailing feathers. Front Office Sports was informed by a person with knowledge of the idea that the new clothing is intended to showcase the careers of the team’s best players who played before 2020.

A team spokeswoman informs FOS that the Commanders’ organization has no desire to reinstate the old “R” emblem with Native American motifs as an official team logo, even as part of a redesign.
