Businessman Scott Galloway said he dropped his plans to try to take over Rangers because he didn’t want to become “the most hated person in the UK.”

Back in 2021, there were reports going around online that the businessman wanted to take over the Scottish Premiership while Douglas Park was in charge of the Glasgow giants. However, there was never a move for the American to become the manager at Ibrox. However, Galloway, who is now a Clinical Professor of marketing at the New York University Stern School of Business, finally told Steven Bartlett about his plans to leave the club on the Diary of a CEO podcast.

Galloway made a lot of money by starting and selling a number of tech companies. He also sat on the boards of directors for companies like the New York Times and Urban Outfitters, and he says he got a group of 14 people together to take over the Rangers. When they talked to a close ally, though, the idea was quickly scrapped.

When talking about buying clubs like Tottenham, he said, “I got about 14 of the richest and most famous Scottish people in the US together and told them, ‘Let’s go buy Rangers FC.'” This was because the company was publicly held. I knew what it was: a £10 million conversion note.

Someone I know who is a well-known Scottish historian then told me, “You’d be the most hated person in the UK.” He says, “You don’t know anything about football; you’d look like an American idiot over there.” I agree, of course. It makes him wonder, “Why don’t you just go to Rangers games?”

“There is a pain equation with buying sports teams because you are buying a tribe and most of the time you won’t win,” Bartlett replied. Then there’s Dave from Southampton; he’s been a fan of that football club his whole life and is a p*****”.”

Speaking only to Ibrox News, Bardell said: “I don’t view it as the end for Dessers generally.

“Igamane seems to be a low-risk signing, hence I doubt he is arriving as a straight replacement for that fee.

“I would contend they are getting him with an eye towards development and improvement following cheap registration. I wouldn’t particularly expect that one in implies another goes out for Rangers.

Though he had a great performance in front of goal in his first year, Dessers is a player whose ratings from fans last season were not very good.

The Nigerian dropped off among any other striker possibilities but concluded the season as Rangers’ top scorer.

Clement has to be ready to forfeit a forward option since Igamane is arriving; else, he would have very little minutes.

After so long out, Danilo will need some time to recover his match fitness; Igamane will acclimatise to the Scottish Premiership.

Having said that, Dessers looks poised for the Ibrox exit door in the summer window, however right now he is the best striker available to Rangers.

Keith Wyness: Rangers are being pushed to bring “top no. 9” to Ibrox

Keith Wyness, who used to be the manager of Aberdeen, has said that Rangers need to sign a “top number nine” in the summer.

In a new episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old said that the Gers have focused on “shoring up” their “leaky defence” in the first part of the window. He has been CEO of Aberdeen from 2000 to 2004, Everton and Aston Villa for long periods of time, and now runs a football consultancy that helps elite clubs.

Rangers have already signed left back Jefte, centre back Clinton Nsiala, and winger Mohamed Diomande to long-term contracts this summer.

Along with them, Hamza Igamane, Connor Barron, and Liam Kelly have arrived at Ibrox.

Fabio Silva has returned to Wolves from a loan spell, and Kemar Roofe has been let go because his contract was up.

Rangers’ top scorer in the 2023–24 season was right back James Tavernier (20). The club came second in the Scottish Premiership.

Wyness says the Rangers will change their plan and look for “top number nine.”

Wyness said that the team has a “lot of work ahead” of it to get to the same level as Celtic, their foes.

What does the future hold for forgotten Ibrox star?

Subbed off during the last 16 defeat against Spain while wearing a hair net, Ianis Hagi might have wished for a more dignified end to his Euro 2024 adventure.

Still, the Rangers playmaker can reflect on a positive summer with Romania after another difficult season of club football and amid continued speculation about his future.

Of course, referring to Hagi as a Rangers playmaker seems slightly disingenuous. It’s been a while since he made any play on behalf of the Ibrox club. Nearly 12 months, indeed – and even then it didn’t feel like he was an integral part of the club’s future plans, certainly not near future.

His frustration was evident when he opened up about finding it difficult to comprehend why he wasn’t making a greater contribution to Rangers having recovered from a serious knee injury.

He had come on as a second half substitute against Morton in the League Cup and had played only the last moments of a Champions League qualifying win over Servette. When the then manager Michael Beale excluded him from the Champions League squad for the play-off tie with PSV Eindhoven, the writing seemed to be on the wall. And so it proved – by the time the transfer window ended, he was out on loan at La Liga side Alaves.

Still, this is Rangers. Hagi has only had to wait around a bit – while his case playing 25 games on loan for Alaves, more often from the bench than not – before surveying a new landscape at Ibrox. Whether Philippe Clement’s vision of Rangers might include Hagi remains to be seen. There’s already a body of opinion that the Romanian with the famous dad is a better bet at No.10 than the ex-Norwich City player with an active Instagram account.

That said, it would surprise no one if neither Hagi nor Todd Cantwell are stepping out at Murrayfield, Hampden or wherever else Rangers can find to play their opening home games next season.

In light of Clement’s previous admission that he watches football all the time – he once cited divorce from his first wife as evidence – we can assume he has not missed any of Hagi’s appearances, two from the start and two from the bench, in Germany. He has impressed in glimpses, which is perhaps the story of his stop-start career so far.

It is now four years since Hagi signed a permanent contract at Ibrox having impressed while on loan from Genk. Rangers fans seemed thrilled at the prospect of being able enjoy the then 21-year-old’s upwards trajectory.

That hasn’t always been the case at a club criticised for signing players who are past their best or simply not good enough in the first place. Injury has of course been the most significant factor in Hagi’s struggles to establish himself at Ibrox although he was not a regular at Alaves either – just ten starts out of 25 appearances.

Indeed, last season was an unusual season. He scored more goals for his country than at club level, although he failed to add to his tally at Euro 2024. Nevertheless, he got deeper into the tournament than any other Scottish-based player. He was also one of the few to augment rather than tarnish their reputation. Rangers might be advised to take advantage of this situation.

With still two years left of the contact extension Hagi signed shortly after Beale took over in December 2022, Rangers can expect to recoup at least some of the outlay, although the exact amount the Ibrox club paid – it is reckoned to be between £2-3 million – and the precise arrangement was never disclosed.

Then CEO James Bisgrove praised Genk for their cooperation in making the deal happen, noting that it was full of enterprising clauses. It’s likely the Belgian club will stand to gain to some extent. Whatever the situation, a clean break for both Rangers and Hagi would appear to be the prudent way forward.

What’s new with Rangers’ transfers this summer? They’re getting ready for a busy few weeks.

Rangers are making plans as they try to make more moves during the summer transfer window.

In the next few weeks, manager Philippe Clement and Ibrox recruitment chief Nils Koppen want to add more experienced players to their team. At the very least, they want a new right-sided defender, wide, and striker.

The Light Blues could also look to improve other areas as the Belgian squad change continues. Bringing in new players would help the ones they already have, like Jefte, Clinton Nsiala, Liam Kelly, Connor Barron, and Oscar Cortes, who have all signed contracts so far.

There are still likely to be departures. Current captain James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, and Ianis Hagi, as well as Jack Butland, who was named “Player of the Year” last season, are all likely to be wanted by other teams.

Rangers faces a new financial crisis

 

If Rangers has to use Murrayfield for games in 2024–25, the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) will decide how much they have to pay the club.

Daniel Bowers, a journalist for Football Insider and a Scottish expert, said that in an interview for the Inside Track show.

Many people think that Rangers will play at least a few of their first competitive games in 2024–25 at Murrayfield in Edinburgh. The fact that a pre-season friendly against Manchester United will be held there on July 20th is a hint in this direction.

But this could be seen as a chance for Scottish Rugby Union to make a lot of money if they can make a deal with the Gers, given how bad things are for the club.

Hampden Park is another idea that has been brought up, but it will be closed for at least the first few weeks of the new season while the playing surface is resurfaced after the summer concerts.

On top of that, Queens Park needs to use the stadium, but the smaller venue next door isn’t open.

Rangers might have to pay a lot of money for Murrayfield.

As the season gets closer, the Rangers are pretty much at the mercy of any venue owners.

Bowers says that SRU may have to be tough-loved and Murrayfield may have to be used until the “shambles” of fixing up Ibrox is fixed.

It is thought that SRU would want a big paycheck plus earnings from ticket sales, merchandise, and other costs related to the games.

Keith Wyness, who used to be the manager of Aberdeen, told Football Insider [27 June] that Rangers can’t even rule out playing their whole 2024–25 season at Murrayfield because of delays in sending materials from Asia that are throwing off their plans to rebuild.

Wyness said that the home of Scottish Rugby was the “only sensible option” in the middle of the chaos at Ibrox, where fans were quickly losing patience with the club and its partners.

There is no clear way for Rangers to make a deal right now, but with the Scottish Premiership schedule released earlier this week and Champions League qualifying still to come, time is running out.

Rangers make a news about a transfer by Fabrizio Romano, as Ibrox elbows out to get talent

Arsenal in the Premier League and teams in the USA were both very interested in the skilled 16-year-old.

Fabrizio Romano says that Alexander Smith turned down big offers from clubs in England and the USA to sign his first professional deal with Rangers.

Arsenal and other unknown clubs were also thought to be interested in the highly-rated 16-year-old, but the Ibrox team beat them to the player.Smith also has family in the US and is a dual citizen, which means he can play for both countries. He has been capped by both at the youth level.

So, people thought that MLS teams were ready to bring the starlet over to the United States. He has now put an end to any rumours that he might be leaving Glasgow, though, by committing his future to the Light Blues.

Romano says the young player has signed a new three-year deal. This is great news for the Gers academy, as they’ve lost a lot of their best players to teams south of the border in recent years. He wrote on X: “Alexander Smith has signed a professional contract with Rangers for three years. Deal is done.” Smith could have played for the USA or Scotland, but he chose Rangers over strong choices in the MLS and Premier League.

It is said that Rangers would have been owed a six-figure sum as compensation if Smith had signed his first professional contract with another team. They may have been keeping an eye on his growth for a few months.
