The prestigious Maxwell Award was given to Ryan Williams, WR for Alabama, in recognition of his exceptional performance and contributions to football.
Ryan Williams, a standout wide receiver for the Alabama Crimson Tide, has been honored with the prestigious Maxwell Award, recognizing his exceptional performance and significant contributions to college football during the 2024 season. This accolade is awarded annually to the nation’s most outstanding player, and Williams’ remarkable achievements have firmly established him as a rising star in the sport.
Early Life and High School Career
Born on February 9, 2007, in Mobile, Alabama, Ryan Williams attended Saraland High School, where he showcased his athletic prowess early on. As a sophomore in 2022, he recorded 88 receptions for 1,641 yards and 24 touchdowns, earning him the title of Alabama Mr. Football—the first sophomore to receive this honor. He repeated this feat in his junior year with 72 receptions for 1,324 yards and 19 touchdowns, becoming the first two-time winner of the award. His high school career totals include over 4,400 offensive yards and 76 touchdowns, underscoring his versatility and talent.
Transition to College Football
Williams made the bold decision to reclassify from the 2025 recruiting class to 2024, committing to the University of Alabama. At just 17 years old, he became one of the youngest players in FBS football. His impact was immediate; in his collegiate debut against Western Kentucky, he earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors by catching two passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns, contributing to a commanding 63–0 victory.
2024 Season Highlights
Throughout the 2024 season, Williams consistently demonstrated his exceptional skills. A defining moment came against the No. 2 ranked Georgia Bulldogs, where he caught six passes for 177 yards, including a pivotal 75-yard touchdown that secured a 41–34 victory for Alabama. This performance not only solidified his reputation but also played a crucial role in Alabama’s ascent to the No. 1 spot in national rankings.
Williams’ season statistics are impressive:
- Receptions: 45
- Receiving Yards: 857
- Touchdowns: 8
- Average Yards per Catch: 19.0
