‘To be honest’: Alan Shearer admits he’s shocked at what Chris Sutton has done since leaving Celtic

Celtic have a number of players leave the club and go on and have pretty mundane careers. But not Chris Sutton.

The former Celtic hero enjoyed a trophy-laden spell under Martin O’Neill as he picked up four league titles, three Scottish Cups and a League Cup during his career at Parkhead.

Sutton also helped Celtic win their first domestic treble since the Jock Stein era and get to their first European final since the 1970 Europan Cup defeat to Feyenoord.

So I think it’s fair to say that he is seen as a legend in the eyes of many Celtic supporters. And now, Sutton has carved out a very successful career as a pundit on both sides of the border.

And that is what has shocked former England hero and Newcastle legend, Alan Shearer the most. Now a successful pundit himself, Shearer shares why Sutton’s move into the media has shocked him after a short discussion with Gary Lineker on The Rest Is Football podcast.

Lineker: “Chris Sutton has become quite a character in terms of punditry. Could you see that? He always seemed quite dour.”

Shearer: “No. He didn’t really say a lot, to be honest. I couldn’t see him having a career in the media at all.

“But he’s done really well actually. He’s a he’s a good lad, a nice lad.”

Sutton is a superb pundit. His analysis of the game provokes discussion and he is always very fair when it comes to Celtic whether it’s with praise or criticism.

But if we are honest, what we also enjoy is how he easily triggers the supporters of the Ibrox club across the water.

Sutton just has a knack of winding up the Rangers support and, if truth be told, that is just as enjoyable as his punditry on the game.

It’s quite interesting to read that Sutton was a quiet person behind the scenes at Blackburn. It must have been his time at Celtic that brought his true personality to the fore.
