The 190th game in the series between the two teams. 105-79-5 is the Bears’ lead. At home, the Bears are up 61-30-4. In Detroit, the Lions prevailed 23–20 on Thanksgiving. Last year, the Bears prevailed 28–13 at Soldier Field.

The Coaches: In his fourth season, Lions coach Dan Campbell has a 43-36-1 record, including a 4-3 record versus the Bears. Campbell has an 18-19-1 road record.

Thomas Brown, the interim head coach of the Bears, is 0–2. After Matt Eberflus was fired, he assumed leadership of the team.

Last Week: The Lions dropped to a first-place tie with the Minnesota Vikings for the NFC North lead after losing 46-42 at home to the Buffalo Bills. The Vikings have the tiebreaker since they won the previous meeting between the two clubs. With CB Carlton Davis II breaking his jaw and RB David Montgomery and DL Alim McNeill suffering season-ending knee injuries, Detroit has been losing players since their previous game against the Bears. In addition to Davis, Montgomery, and McNeill, they presently have 21 players on injured reserve, including starters DE Aidan Hutchinson (broken leg), LB Alex Anzalone (arm), and DT D.J. Reader (shoulder). The reader hasn’t gone on IR, but they missed last week. Josh Allen and the Bills took a 35–14 lead in the second half and managed to hold it until 12 seconds remained, when they gave up a touchdown. Since Detroit ends the season at home against the Vikings, it can win the division by staying ahead of Minnesota in the next two games against the Bears and 49ers.

The Bears were behind 13-0 against Minnesota when D’Andre Swift scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. However, the score was erased by a penalty on backup center Doug Kramer for not reporting to officials, and the Bears’ chances quickly crumbled into a landslide defeat. Caleb Williams sailed through his sixth consecutive start without an interception, finishing 18 of 31 for 191 yards and scoring a touchdown to Keenan Allen.

The Matchup: The Lions’ greatest winning run in team history, which lasted 11 games, came to an end when they lost to Buffalo. They want to bounce back, but the outlook is dire because so many players are now on injured reserve or have ailments. The league’s lone club without a road loss this season is Detroit. The Bears are attempting to end a losing skid of eight games. They are 4-2 on the season and haven’t won since defeating Jacksonville in London. They have fallen from first in red zone defense to third due to injuries, a losing streak, and a coaching change, but they have managed to stay away from giveaways while improving their defense. Williams has now thrown 286 consecutive passes without an interception, and their turnover differential is plus ten.

Notably, Williams’ run of passes without an interception is a Bears and NFL rookie record, but it falls far short of Aaron Rodgers’ all-time record of 402 passes west. The Bears defense has taken away seven games in a row, which is the longest run since they had eight in a row in 2018. With 25, a Bears rookie record, punter Tory Taylor ranks second in the NFC in terms of punts downed inside the 20. Dominique Robinson’s blocked punt last week was the Bears’ second of the season and the first time they’ve had many in a season since 2008. After 14 games, the Lions’ 12-2 record is their best ever. Detroit has won 33 games in the previous three seasons, which is the most in the history of the league. With 2,640 scrimmage yards from running backs, the Lions are ahead of Tampa Bay, which is in second place in the NFL. In terms of red zone touchdown percentage, Detroit comes in second (70%). Since 2022, Detroit’s offense has led the league in points scored (1,373), total touchdowns (169), yards (18,826), and first downs (1,087) under offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. The sixth quarterback in NFL history to throw for 100 or more touchdowns with multiple clubs is Jared Goff. The only quarterback to consistently achieve at least 400 passing yards and a perfect passer rating of 158.3 is Goff. This season, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown has tied for the most catches in the NFL with three games with ten or more catches.

Next Week: On Monday Night Football, December 30 at 7:15 p.m., the Lions travel to San Francisco.

On December 26 at 7:15 p.m., the Bears will face Seattle.
