The blistering stretch of efficiency that Jared Goff predicted would be repaid with a record ranking
Jared Goff, the quarterback for the Detroit Lions, has completed 82.8 percent of his passes and has a passer rating of 140.1 in his most recent six games. Over a six-game period, no other quarterback in NFL history has completed more than 80% of his passes.
With a passer rating of 145.9, Goff has completed 83.8 percent of his passes, 11 touchdowns, and zero interceptions in his last five games, beginning with his 18-for-18 performance against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 4.
Goff is currently experiencing an unprecedented and extraordinary period of passing efficiency, regardless of how one chooses to analyze it. Additionally, a distinguished colleague who is a graduate of his alma mater has observed Goff’s accomplishments and has taken advantage of the opportunity to publicly commend him this week.
Jared Goff anticipated that the season would conclude with a record-breaking performance.
Of course, Goff is currently the league’s top-performing quarterback this season, with a completion rate of 74.9 percent. If he is able to sustain it, that would be the single-season record for completion percentage, despite the fact that he has only half of the season remaining. He will achieve a 75 percent completion rate for the season by completing his first pass against the Houston Texans on Sunday night.
In 2018, Drew Brees achieved the NFL record for the highest completion percentage in a season by completing 74.4 percent of his passes. Brees has also achieved the second and third highest completion rates in a single season (74.3 percent in 2019 and 72 percent in 2017). Perhaps Dan Campbell is not so far off in recognizing some of the qualities that Brees possessed in Goff.
Lindsey Thiry, a correspondent for ESPN.com, predicted that Goff would be awarded the league MVP as part of the website’s midseason NFL predictions. Seth Wickersham, a writer, followed a somewhat similar trajectory in the “records that could be broken” section, predicting that the Lions’ signal caller will surpass Brees’ completion percentage record.
“He is on the brink of surpassing Brees’ 2018 single-season record of 74.4%, as he currently holds the NFL’s highest completion percentage at 74.9%.” Additionally, Goff is not exhibiting any indications of slowed down. Over the next three weeks, he has the potential to increase his passing statistics against the Colts and Jaguars, two pass defenses that are currently underperforming, as he has completed 30 consecutive passes to his top target, Amon-Ra St. Brown.
Goff is currently a top contender for the NFL MVP award, and his recent string of impressive passing performances has sparked speculation that he may break the single-season completion percentage record.
