Regarding Za’Darius Smith’s debut, Lions coach Campbell said, “I think he fits right in with us.”
Edge rusher Za’Darius Smith made his Detroit Lions debut twelve days after he was acquired in a trade with the Cleveland Browns.
In his debut game wearing Honolulu blue, the veteran had a team-high three pressures, a sack and a stop against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, according to Pro Football Focus. Given that Sunday’s game went out of control early and that Lions head coach Dan Campbell stated Smith may be on a pitch count early in Detroit, that all occurred in 37 plays, which is a really respectable effort.
When asked about his impression of Smith’s debut on Monday, Campbell said that he was pleased with what he observed.
Yes, it was nice to have him out there, and I felt he did some wonderful things for us. Simply be a component of this puzzle, as we discussed last week,” Campbell added.
Smith, 32, can do a lot of different things and just provides another aspect to Detroit’s defence, the coach said.
He is an experienced player who is instinctive, doesn’t remain blocked for long, and has excellent hand-eye coordination. As I mentioned before, he can give an advantage in the run game and excels at working games with players like Alim McNeill and D.J. Reader. He simply has a feel for such things. I believe that my first date with him was enjoyable. He seems to be a perfect fit for us.
This weekend, Smith and the Lions will travel to Indianapolis to play the Colts.
