Detroit radio host criticises Aidan Hutchinson for remarks about Myles Garrett

Aidan Hutchinson made seemingly innocuous remarks about the Lions potentially trading for Myles Garrett, but a local radio host objected.

Myles Garrett, the Cleveland Browns’ defensive end, began Super Bowl week by publicly requesting a trade. The Detroit Lions are a likely suitor, as he and Aidan Hutchinson could form a formidable edge rusher duo.

Unless general manager Brad Holmes is willing to make a significant departure from his core philosophy, the Lions will not give up what it takes to acquire Garrett.Calling the Browns is a no-brainer.

At NFL Honours on Thursday night, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press asked Hutchinson if the Lions could trade for Garrett.

“Everyone is asking me about that. “I don’t know,” Hutchinson replied. “I don’t think you can have that many guys on one D-line, I’m not sure. Who knows, but I believe it’s highly unlikely.

In the moment, those seemed like fairly harmless remarks. However, what Hutchinson said struck Mike Valenti of 97.1 The Ticket as odd.

The Detroit radio host took issue with what Aidan Hutchinson said about teaming up with Myles Garrett.

Valenti challenged Hutchinson’s statements during his show on Friday.

“What time in history have you ever heard a great player say they didn’t want to be surrounded by other great players?” Valenti spoke. “That is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. Just straight away. If you want to say it’s above your pay grade and stay out of it, I understand. If you want to say, ‘Hell yeah, I’d love to have him, but obviously that decision is made above my head, cool.’ I’ve never heard a great player say, ‘Nah, we don’t really need that. You can’t have that many good people on the D-line. “No one ever.”

Valenti and his co-hosts/guests speculated that Hutchinson may not want to share the spotlight with a player of Garrett’s calibre, citing Amon-Ra St. Brown’s recent podcast interview and other players’ responses to the prospect of adding a great player to their teams.

Hutchinson’s choice of words during the conversation with Birkett (“you can’t have that many dudes on one d-line”) was poor. It would have been different if the question about Garrett had caught him off guard. There may or may not be more to his comments, but the manner in which he responded to the question lends itself to speculation about why he said it.
