At the 2025 World Alpine Ski Championships, Mikaela Shiffrin and Breezy Johnson of the USA win the first-ever women’s team combined title
Shiffrin won a record-tying 15th medal at the World Championships, while Johnson won her second gold by winning the downhill title in Saalbach.
Mikaela Shiffrin and Breezy Johnson are the inaugural women’s world champions in the new Alpine Team Combined competition.
On February 11, Team USA won gold in Saalbach, Austria, with a combined time of 2:40.89 from two Americans.
The new format, which makes its senior competition debut, consists of a downhill followed by a slalom.
Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami and Wendy Holdener won silver with the fastest slalom time. They finished 0.39 second behind the winners.
Austria won bronze, with Stephanie Venier (who recently won the Super-G title) and Katharina Truppe finishing 0.53 seconds behind.
Johnson finished fourth in the downhill, 0.51 seconds behind teammate Lauren Macuga’s top time. This is her second title at the World Championships, following her gold medal in the downhill.
Shiffrin, making her debut in Saalbach, was the fourth-fastest slalom racer (0.39 seconds slower than Holdener), earning her 15th medal at Worlds. With 15 podium finishes at World Championships, the US superstar has now matched the record of Christel Cranz.
“This was an amazing day for me up there, but it was nerve-racking. Breezy did an excellent job this morning. “It’s unbelievable, I’m so happy,” said the now-eight-time world champion Shiffrin in the finish area, beaming with joy.
Johnson went on to say, “She is such a legend.” It’s really cool to be hitting my stride. And she’s obviously been using hers for a decade or more. She described it as nerve-racking, but being Mikeala’s teammate is even more nerve-racking!”
Shiffrin has decided to withdraw from the giant slalom event due to PTSD.On Saturday (15 February), she will compete again in the slalom.
The amazing Picabo Street took the alpine skiing world by storm in the 1990s.
Macuga’s impressive run led the downhill rankings, but Team USA 2 finished just off the podium with Paula Moltzan’s 15th-fastest time.
Lindsey Vonn and teammate AJ Hurt finished 16th at the World Championships in Saalbach, after finishing 21st in the opening leg.
Team Germany 1 placed second after the first leg, with Emma Aicher clocking the second-fastest time. However, their medal hopes were dashed when Lena Duerr made a mistake in the slalom and did not finish.
Mirjam Puchner guided Team Austria 1 to third place after the downhill. Katharina Liensberger, the 2021 world slalom champion, managed only the 13th-fastest time. They placed fifth overall.
The men’s Team Combined event at the 2025 World Championships will take place on Wednesday, February 12.
