The Emergency department: Detroit Supercross Round 6
What a start to the Monster Energy Supercross Series. In multiple ways. Unfortunately, not all of the options have been positive.
Plenty of winners to start the season. So far, only Chase Sexton has won both classes more than once. However, the number of injuries, especially this week, is putting a damper on the series after only five rounds of 17.
After losing the defending champion, Jett Lawrence, to an ACL last week. Many expected former champion Eli Tomac to challenge for the title. Only he managed to dab his foot during qualifying in Tampa. Similar to Jett in Glendale. Only Eli was able to jam his leg between the face of a jump and his footpeg. This resulted in a broken fibula. His return has yet to be determined. But in his final full season, things have not gone as planned for the #3.
Hunter Lawrence took a dirt sample in Tampa, resulting in shoulder damage that will require surgery. As with Little Brother, Supercross will be completed in 2025.
Hunter Lawrence will miss the rest of the Supercross season due to a shoulder injury sustained during a crash in Tampa.
Malcolm Stewart won his first 450 class race in Tampa, which was a positive outcome. Given the long road he has had to travel due to injury in recent years, this moment was somewhat overdue, but it was also possible that it would never happen. Malcolm’s challenge will now be to replicate the effort and remain injury-free for an extended period of time.
Max Anstie dominated the East Coast 250 series opener in Tampa. The British rider was consistent throughout the day on his Star Racing Yamaha. This year in the AMA, he appears to be surrounded by a quiet confidence, which I expect to grow as the season progresses.
This week in Detroit will pique fans’ interest in the series. I expect a cold venue with plenty of snow to serve as a warm-up challenge for the riders before each session this weekend. Whoever is able to manage their efforts and be ready to perform when the gate opens will most likely win this week. Can Cooper Webb, Ken Roczen, or Jason Anderson become the fifth winner in six rounds this week in Detroit?
