‘Here we go!’ – Fabrizio Romano confirms Manchester United transfer boost:’medical booked’ for Newcastle United deal
How much could United make from the Elanga sale?
Manchester United inserted a sell-on clause in Anthony Elanga’s £15 million transfer to Nottingham Forest two years ago. Erik ten Hag did not consider the 23-year-old to be a significant player and informed him he may look for a new club as he sought regular playing opportunities.
It proved to be a really good decision for the player. Elanga appeared in all of their Premier League games last season, scoring six goals and providing 11 assists as they finished seventh and qualified for the Conference League.
United has never released the contents of the sell-on clause, but it is believed to be worth 15% of any profits made. It means that if Newcastle signs Elanga for the proposed £55 million amount, United will be entitled to a share of the £40 million differential after deducting the cost of signing him, rather than the total deal. Depending on how much Newcastle pays up front, the sum may range from £5.25 million to £6 million.

In recent years, United has sought to improve its sales strategy by allowing players to depart for reasonable transfer fees, with the true worth represented by various sell-on clauses incorporated into the transactions. It implies that, while some players have left for relatively low initial sums, they might provide United with a significant cash boost in the future if they are sold again.
