Fabrizio Romano explains the cause behind Bryan Mbeumo’s tardiness; it is out of Manchester United’s control
Manchester United are still negotiating with Brentford to sign Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo for Rúben Amorim this summer.
Manchester United are still negotiating for their third signing of the summer, following the signings of Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon, while a deal for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo is nearing completion.
Rúben Amorim is eager to enhance his attacking options further after bringing in Cunha, but conversations with Brentford regarding Mbeumo are slow to proceed.
An initial proposal of £55 million for the 25-year-old was rejected in early June. A second bid, which contained the same basic sum plus £7.5 million in add-ons, was also rejected.
Despite the delays, there is growing optimism that a deal will be achieved. Once Mbeumo’s transfer to Old Trafford is finalised, United are anticipated to focus on player exits and continue their search for a striker and midfielder ahead of the Premier League’s mid-August kick-off.
Romano speaks on the current Mbeumo delays.
Fans continue to be frustrated by the lack of news regarding United’s pursuit of Mbeumo, despite the fact that the initial deadline for having the 25-year-old in the squad for preseason has passed.
United has not submitted a third proposal since their two previous bids were denied, but sources continue to indicate that they are prepared to do so. According to Fabrizio Romano, the most recent batch of delays is largely outside United’s control.
In his weekly GiveMeSport newsletter, the transfer specialist revealed that United are still trying to sign the player, but the present date of the transfer is also dependent on Brentford, over which United has little control.
Brentford has been busy in the summer window this week, rejecting a new bid from Nottingham Forest for Yoane Wissa worth less than £25 million.
The club is preparing to sell Christian Nørgaard to Arsenal and sign England international Jordan Henderson on a free transfer after he declined a contract extension at Ajax.
Romano went on to say that Mbeumo’s move to United is still “on,” although there has been no indication that the transfer has been completed.
United’s players returned to Carrington this week for pre-season training, including newcomers Cunha and Leon. They remain hopeful of signing Brentford before the US tour.
However, according to Sky Sports, the club is still confident that a definitive agreement with Brentford will be struck before flying to the United States to play Bournemouth, Everton, and West Ham in the Premier League summer series later this month.
Meanwhile, it has been claimed that Mbeumo is becoming increasingly irritated with the lack of progress over the last two weeks.
With the player returning to Brentford training next week, he will be back in England, potentially speeding up the process.

Fabrizio Romano claims Newcastle United can sign a seven-goal midfielder for around £20 million
Newcastle United may try to bolster their midfield options this summer, with one man set to leave.

Sean Longstaff, a Newcastle academy graduate, is believed to be close to joining Leeds United for £12 million after accepting personal terms with the newly promoted Premier League club.
The 27-year-old has made 214 appearances for Newcastle since coming through the club’s junior system, but he is about to leave when his contract at St James’ Park expires.
Newcastle extended Longstaff’s contract through the 2024/25 season to avoid losing him for free this summer. Instead, they appear to be planning to cash in and make a modest but pure profit in PSR calculations. The deal will effectively assist fund Anthony Elanga’s move from Nottingham Forest.
The £55 million fee negotiated between Newcastle and Forest will be amortized over the period of Elanga’s original five-year contract at St James’ Park, costing about £11 million per season in PSR terms.
However, more additions are planned for Newcastle this summer, with an additional midfield option now being considered. Newcastle already has a solid midfield, including Sandro Tonali, Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Miley, and Joe Willock.
But one or two injuries might destabilise Newcastle’s midfield. Joelinton, Miley, and Willock have all been out for the past two seasons due to long-term injuries.
Newcastle United has targeted James McAtee.
Newcastle have been keeping an eye on Manchester City’s James McAtee as a potential midfield alternative. The 22-year-old recently guided England Under-21s to European Championship glory following a successful season with Manchester City.
McAtee scored seven goals in 27 appearances for City in 2024/25, but made only eight starts across all competitions. He scored off the bench in a 4-0 victory over Newcastle at the Etihad Stadium in February.
The only exception to his goals is that they all came in massive wins for Manchester City, with four or more goals. If McAtee hadn’t scored in those games, the outcome would have been the same.
However, a lot of clubs, notably Newcastle, respect the young midfielder for his ball-playing ability and adaptability, which allows him to play in an attacking midfield role or out wide on the right side.
Newcastle have recently addressed the right wing position with the impending arrival of Elanga, but McAtee would undoubtedly assist Eddie Howe strengthen his team in preparation for Champions League games.
McAtee has just one year left on his contract at Manchester City, and the club is willing to trade him this summer for as cheap as £20 million. Manchester City could want repurchase provisions, which would put Newcastle off a prospective deal.
City already included a sell-on and buyback clause into James Trafford’s deal with Burnley in 2023. Pep Guardiola’s team may repurchase the goalkeeper for £40 million if they want.
Newcastle are presently negotiating with Burnley to sign Trafford for a cost of roughly £30 million.
Fabrizio Romano delivers James McAtee’s latest update amid Premier League interest.
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, clubs across Europe are interested in McAtee this summer, with Serie A side Atalanta mentioned as a potential destination.
Romano wrote on X: “James McAtee could leave Manchester City this summer for a fee of around £20/25 million.” Clubs in the Bundesliga, Premier League, and Serie A are interested in the Euro U21 winner, who will captain England.
“Atalanta are among clubs well informed on his situation.”
Newcastle is among the Premier League clubs interested, although they are focusing on other areas first. It’s worth keeping an eye on considering the low price and interest from other Premier League clubs such as Nottingham Forest and Leeds United.
Pep Guardiola talks on James McAtee’s future at Manchester City.
Guardiola left McAtee out of Manchester City’s FIFA Club World Cup roster, allowing him to captain England’s Under-21 team to victory in Slovakia.
However, his future at Manchester City is far from guaranteed, as the manager has conceded.
Guardiola stated, “For the age, I’d prefer him to stay.
“But I understand that the players desire more minutes. I’d prefer him to stay because he plays for the academy and understands the rhythms.
“He’s a beautiful individual who has been very well trained. He can play multiple places, but I’m not sure how the squad will be, so we’ll see.”

Newcastle Chiefs Discuss Surprise Move for Premier League Striker Wanted by Manchester United
Newcastle joins Arsenal and Manchester United in considering a deal for Ollie Watkins, who now plays for Aston Villa.
Watkins, 29, emerged as an Arsenal target in January, when the club was looking for a new number nine. While a deal was not reached at the time, the England star was a target again this summer. Arsenal is already in advanced talks over a trade for Viktor Gyokeres.

United respect Watkins, a Premier League veteran with a strong goal scoring record at Villa.
According to The Mail, Watkins has been linked with Newcastle after the departure of Calum Wilson.
The Magpies are looking for a new frontman to compete with Alexander Isak, and have lately ‘talked’ Watkins and Yoane Wissa from Brentford.
The report goes on to say that it’s unclear whether Watkins or Wissa would be willing to compete with Isak, the club’s undoubted first-choice striker. Both would most likely be expensive, and at 29 and 28 years old, neither Watkins nor Wissa would have much resale value.

Newcastle are interested in Dominic Calvert-Lewin, a striker who left Everton at the conclusion of his contract and is now free. Intriguingly, he is also thought to have been offered by Manchester United.
While Arsenal’s deal for Gyokeres makes a move for Watkins improbable, United are reviewing their No. 9 alternatives and could yet make a move for the Aston Villa front.

Newcastle are close to signing former Manchester United winger Anthony Elanga for £55 million, but they are short on attacking options after Wilson said he would be departing St James’ Park after five years due to a contract extension not being agreed upon.
In a statement, he said: “It’s time to say goodbye after an incredible few years at the Toon. Thank you for everything. We remained strong together through highs and lows to assist the club reach new heights.
“I am extremely delighted to have worn the classic number 9 shirt and added a little history to it. “Scoring at the Gallowgate End is truly special.” Although all good things must come to an end, Newcastle United will always hold a special place in my and my family’s hearts.
“Thank you for your memories. CW9.”

‘Next week’: Fabrizio Romano updates on Newcastle United transfer hijack after £21 million deal accepted
AC Milan has accepted a £21 million bid for Newcastle United’s trade target Malick Thiaw.
Newcastle United news: Headlines, team updates, match previews, and reports – all about NUFC
Newcastle were connected with the 23-year-old centre-back last summer as Eddie Howe sought to improve his defence.
Since then, the Magpies have failed to sign Marc Guehi and traded Lloyd Kelly to Juventus, making the need for defensive reinforcements even more pressing a year later.
Thiaw has made 85 appearances for AC Milan since joining from Schalke 04 in 2022, scoring once. In September 2023, he played against Newcastle in a 0-0 Champions League draw at the San Siro, but he was unable to play the return leg due to injury.
AC Milan accepts Malick Thiaw’s transfer proposal.
Thiaw has been widely linked with a move away from Milan this summer, with Serie A club Como having accepted a £21 million deal for the three-time Germany international.
But it was last month, and a deal has yet to be completed, with Thiaw keeping his options open.
Following the ties to Newcastle last summer, the Italian media teased a potential transfer hijack.
Newcastle United transfer hijack?
According to Italian journalist Matteo Morretto, Thiaw is delaying a move to Como in order to compete in a European competition, with Newcastle United mentioned as a possible destination.
AC Milan failed to qualify for Europe after placing ninth in Serie A and runners-up to Bologna in the Coppa Italia. Meanwhile, Cesc Fabregas, a former Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea midfielder, led Como to 10th place, 14 points behind Milan.
Newcastle will play Champions League football again this season, but Eddie Howe has yet to bolster his team this summer.
Moretto told Milan News that as time passes, it becomes more difficult for Thiaw to say yes to Como.
“They tell me that Como is doing everything they can to persuade him, but the German would like to continue playing in a European competition, if feasible.
“There is some admiration from the Premier League. Last year, Newcastle was hunting for Thiaw, and they are still looking for a central defender now.
“So keep an eye on this path, at the moment there is nothing concrete, but I can confirm that Newcastle is also evaluating Thiaw, who, in addition to returning to Germany, would be interested in an experience in the Premier League.”
Eddie Howe comments on Malick Thiaw’s interest.
When asked about Newcastle’s interest in Thiaw last summer, head coach Howe said the defender is ‘a very excellent player’ but did neither confirm or deny it.
“I’m always reluctant to comment on these things [transfer speculation],” Howe remarked when questioned about Thiaw last summer. “He’s a player I know about, of course I do, from our games in the Champions League against Milan and yeah, he’s a very good player, but that’s it.”
Fabrizio Romano delivers an update on Malick Thiaw.
Over the weekend, transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano gave an update on Thiaw’s unclear status.
“Malick Thiaw, expected to make a decision on his future by mid next week with Como waiting for an answer on their proposal,” according to Romano. “The deal between Como and AC Milan for a €25 million [£21 million] package was confirmed two weeks ago. Still up to Malick.”
Despite Thiaw’s clear reluctance to join Como, the final decision will be left to the player, who is available for £21 million. If Newcastle want to make a move, this is a transaction that might be completed swiftly, given the player’s preference to play in the Champions League.
However, Newcastle are currently considering alternative options, with Giorgio Scalvini of Atalanta and Marseille captain Leonardo Balerdi on their radar.
