Alexander Isak quickly recognises the high expectations he must meet in his new household. One game, in fact.

Isak sat on the bench as Liverpool gave the latest chapter of a European adventure that spans decades. Another late and spectacular victory to add to a club’s long and proud tradition of judging itself on the highest level conceivable.

Winning the European Cup, often known as the Champions League, is regarded a true measure of excellence in Liverpool. And it should be. Liverpool has won the most in English football (six).

And, given that Isak cost Liverpool a British record £125 million, he is expected to contribute to the club’s present illustrious history.

Virgil Van Dijk’s stoppage-time header secured a 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid, reviving the atmosphere at Anfield.

The sensation is not new to supporters, but it was for Isak. He had been substituted after less than an hour of his debut.

As a result, he witnessed Atletico manager Diego Simeone become enraged and emotional at the end of the match.

But Isak will discover that, especially on European nights, Anfield treats people who come looking to disrupt the script in this manner.

It even happened to the great Lionel Messi in 2019, when the Argentine icon was reduced to mush as Liverpool scored an incredible 4-0 triumph to advance to the Champions League final at Barcelona’s expense.

There is no location quite like Anfield for such moments. It will be one of the reasons why Isak was so eager to join Liverpool in the first place.

He was so anxious that he was willing to go on strike at Newcastle to complete the transfer. He now has his wish – and a taste of what is expected of him.

St James’ Park is a football hotspot, but it will suddenly feel lukewarm in comparison to the one he’s chosen in Liverpool. With a high price comes high pressure, and Isak has no choice but to perform on a consistent basis.
