Newcastle submitted a January transfer demand after Barcelona’missed chances’
Eddie Howe’s squad suffered an opening night defeat in their Champions League campaign.
Newcastle United lost to Barcelona on the first night of their Champions League campaign. Fans in the Chronicle Live comments section believe they could have boosted their prospects by making significant acquisitions.
Eddie Howe’s team came into the game full of zest, but Barcelona gradually established themselves as European giants. Newcastle had squandered chances in the first half, but the Spanish giants took the lead after the break due to Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford’s debut goal.
Rashford scored again with a powerful strike immediately after, and Anthony Gordon’s consolation goal in the 90th minute was unable to spark a late comeback in injury time. Speaking after the game, Howe said: “It was always going to be an exciting one for our supporters, and the boys put in a lot of effort. We should have done better, but we will examine the situation and try to improve.”
Some supporters claim to have identified areas where the squad might be upgraded to represent a greater threat. Reader Malaga01 writes: “I’ve always believed that we need two excellent midfielders, but many people disagreed, but now it appears that there is a need. Joelinton is slow, and I’m not sure what’s up with Bruno—few passes, many sold balls. The battling spirit was present, but that was enough for now.
Commenter Whgolding writes: “We delude ourselves into thinking we have a good midfield. We have good midfielders who can disrupt, but can they complete attacking passes? No. Tonali does his best, but those in front are nowhere to be seen. Bruno, as charming as he is, needs to stop giving the ball away. Joelinton, well, he just smashes his way into tackles and flatters to deceive with no beneficial results.
“We need to change these three guys. Mix them up, but not with Willock, who is out of his element these days. We are so predictable, and I observed the U19s, who had precisely the same issues.”
Tumbla says, “Our midfield, especially at this level, isn’t quite good enough. The squad pushed and puffed and, to be honest, should have gone into halftime up 2-1. Big Joelinton has yet to perform at his peak this season, while Bruno appears to be done. Tonali’s athleticism is keeping him on the squad, while the other two are fortunate that Anderson was sold and Ramsey was hurt.
“Yes, narrow margins and lost opportunities are significant in games like this, but quality usually wins out. I can’t fault the lads for their efforts; I think they gave their all. We simply missed that little piece of magic.”
DurbanSkyslot writes: “Bruno’s still giving the ball away, and his lack of pace is a serious issue! Joelinton battled, but there wasn’t much forward movement. Tonali was great as usual in the holding role, but the other two in midfield are doing far too little to attack. We absolutely need a playmaking attacking midfielder in our roster.”
Dudley53 writes, “Barcelona were class. We weren’t. What’s the point in taking off Elanga? Our so-called dream midfield performed terribly. On this indication, it will be a difficult season.”
