Mikaela Shiffrin Responds to St. Moritz Super-G Talk as She Heads Into the Europe Leg

Mikaela Shiffrin has already won three slalom races this winter, but the main news right now isn’t what she’s won. It’s about where she could race next. Following strong performances in Tremblant, the American star turned her attention to Europe, fueling predictions of a huge showdown.

One cryptic social media response was all it needed to have fans wondering if a return to speed events and a showdown with a legend were on the way.

Shiffrin announced her trip plans on her podcast’s Instagram account, marking the end of her North American run. The caption established the context for her departure: “Brrrr…it’s cold in here (here=@monttremblant).” “Next stop: Europe ⛷️.”

This update prompted immediate interest in her exact itinerary. In the comments, one fan inquired whether the super-G races in St. Moritz on December 11-12 were on her schedule. The user wrote, “You did well, Miki.” So, St. Moritz SG? I believe you enjoy that place, don’t you?”

Shiffrin held her cards close to her vest. Her reaction was quick and noncommittal: “We’ll see!!”

A decision to race in St. Moritz would instantly generate headlines. If Shiffrin competes, it might set up a highly anticipated matchup with Lindsey Vonn, one of this generation’s finest skiers, who is expected to open her season at the same event.

The duel is especially intriguing because Shiffrin has been gone from speed disciplines for a long time. She has not competed in a World Cup super-G event since 2023 at Val d’Isère, where she failed to finish.

Aside from the possibility for drama in St. Moritz, Shiffrin has a full itinerary in Europe. The forthcoming World Cup legs provide numerous options, including stops in Courchevel, France, on December 16, followed by races in Val d’Isère from December 18 to 21.

How Has Shiffrin Improved Her Giant Slalom Form?

While the speed races remain a question mark, Shiffrin has been forthcoming about her progress in giant slalom. Following her recent performances at Tremblant, where she finished sixth and fourth, the 30-year-old spoke about the technical improvements she made over the winter.

The 2024-25 campaign brought substantial obstacles in GS, partly as a result of a crash in Killington last November. However, Shiffrin believes she has turned a turnaround.

Shiffrin reflected on her rehabilitation and improvement, stating, “Last year, I was returning from injury and hoping to make it in the second run.” I was three seconds behind than the fastest girls and had no idea how to improve.”

This winter, however, confidence has replaced uncertainty. “We’ve done a lot of work this summer to get to this point where I’m in the second run and routinely top-10 in that region. “I’m building, and it’s a really cool position to be in, but there’s still work to be done,” Shiffrin said of her latest performance.

The findings support her assessment. Shiffrin has finished fourth at both Soelden and Tremblant this season, just missing out on the giant slalom podium.
