Dean Windass reacts as Josh Windass linked with surprise Wrexham departure
Dean Windass has hinted at his thoughts on speculation surrounding his son Josh Windass after reports suggested the Wrexham forward could be on the move just months into his time at the club.
Josh Windass only joined Wrexham in July, signing a three-year contract with the ambitious Welsh side. Since arriving, the 31-year-old has quickly established himself as a key figure in Phil Parkinson’s squad, contributing six goals and three assists as the Red Dragons push to solidify their status in the Championship.

Despite his recent impact, rumours have emerged linking Josh with a potential return to former club Rangers. The Glasgow giants are said to be monitoring his situation as they look to strengthen their attacking options, raising eyebrows given how recently he committed his future to Wrexham.
Dean Windass, a Hull City icon, appeared to acknowledge the reports on social media. On Tuesday, he shared a screenshot of an article detailing the speculation on X, adding only a shrug emoji and a football emoji. Though brief, the post sparked discussion among supporters, with many interpreting it as a knowing reaction to the sudden rumours.
Josh previously enjoyed a successful spell at Rangers between 2016 and 2018, where he scored 19 goals in 73 appearances. His time at Ibrox remains a special chapter for both player and family. Dean Windass has spoken openly in the past about the pride he felt watching his son represent one of Scotland’s biggest clubs.
Recalling those moments, Dean described how emotional it was to see Josh walk out at Ibrox, particularly during a match against Aberdeen. He reflected on how the experience helped him better understand the pride his own father once felt watching him play, admitting he was moved to tears by the atmosphere and the significance of the occasion.
Josh’s career path has also crossed with current Rangers boss Danny Röhl, under whom he played at Sheffield Wednesday. Windass spent five years with the Owls and enjoyed a productive 2023–24 campaign under Röhl, scoring 13 goals in the Championship. The pair’s previous working relationship has added further intrigue to the Rangers links.
After leaving Sheffield Wednesday last summer amid the club’s well-documented financial struggles, Josh joined Wrexham on a free transfer. His arrival was seen as a statement signing as the club continued its rapid rise. Since then, he has spoken glowingly about Röhl’s coaching style, praising his attention to detail and his ability to communicate ideas clearly to players.
In an interview earlier this year, Josh described Röhl as the best coach he had worked with, highlighting the German’s patience and individual-focused approach. He noted that while plans do not always unfold perfectly during matches, the preparation and tactical clarity provided by Röhl often give players confidence going into games.
According to Sky Sports, Rangers are actively seeking an attacking midfielder ahead of the January transfer window, with Josh Windass among those under consideration. However, Wrexham appear determined to keep hold of one of their standout performers. Reports suggest the club have already turned down an initial loan approach from Rangers.

The Daily Record claims Wrexham officials are firm in their stance and unwilling to entertain further loan bids. With Josh under contract until 2028, the club is under no pressure to sell and is expected to resist any attempts to prise him away mid-season.
A permanent transfer could also prove difficult for Rangers to finance. Josh’s wages are believed to be a significant obstacle, potentially pricing the Scottish club out of a deal despite suggestions that the player himself may be open to discussions.
For now, Josh Windass remains an important part of Wrexham’s plans, while his father’s understated social media reaction has only added fuel to speculation. Whether the interest develops into something more concrete remains to be seen, but Wrexham are showing little sign of letting one of their key players leave so soon after his arrival.
