Daniel Peretz set for Southampton after Bayern and Hamburg resolve loan impasse
Daniel Peretz’s long-anticipated move to Southampton is finally on the verge of completion after Bayern Munich and Hamburg reached an agreement to end the goalkeeper’s loan spell early. According to reports in Germany, the obstacles that had stalled the transfer have now been cleared, opening the door for the Israeli international to continue his career in England.
Local outlet Hamburger Abendblatt reports that negotiations between all parties have concluded successfully, allowing Peretz to leave Hamburg with immediate effect. The breakthrough follows a tense period in which the 25-year-old applied pressure by refusing to train, a move that appears to have accelerated the resolution of the situation.
Hamburg had been reluctant to release Peretz without first securing adequate compensation and ensuring they could source a replacement goalkeeper. Both of those concerns have now been addressed. Bayern Munich have reportedly agreed to cover the €500,000 loan fee that Hamburg initially paid, effectively reimbursing the club and smoothing the path toward an early termination of the deal.
With that financial hurdle removed, Peretz is now free to travel to England and complete his move to Southampton, who have been pushing hard to reinforce their goalkeeping options during the January window.
Details of Southampton deal emerge
The Championship side’s agreement with Bayern Munich is understood to be structured as a loan with a significant option to buy. According to Sky Germany, Southampton will pay Bayern a €400,000 loan fee for the remainder of the season. Crucially, the deal also includes an option to make the transfer permanent in the summer for a fee in the region of €8 million.
For Bayern, the move represents a chance to place a player who has struggled for regular minutes into an environment where he is likely to play consistently. The German champions signed Peretz from Maccabi Tel Aviv in August 2023 for €5 million, viewing him at the time as a long-term project with international pedigree.
However, limited opportunities in Munich have stalled his development. As a result, his market value has declined in recent seasons, dropping from a peak of around €5 million to closer to €2 million, largely due to a lack of sustained first-team football rather than any major decline in performance.
Southampton’s interest appears driven by a desire for a goalkeeper with top-level experience who can offer immediate competition and potentially become a long-term solution between the posts if the permanent option is activated.
What Southampton are getting in Peretz
Despite his relatively modest number of appearances, Peretz arrives with experience at the highest levels of the game. During his time in Germany, he made four Bundesliga appearances for Bayern, including a notable run of three consecutive league starts during the 2024/25 season.
Those matches came between matchdays 13 and 15, when Manuel Neuer was sidelined with injury. Peretz conceded five goals across those three fixtures, a return that was considered respectable given the circumstances and the pressure of stepping in for one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time.
Beyond league action, Peretz has also featured in Germany’s domestic cup competitions. He has made four DFB-Pokal starts across his time in the country, including two appearances for Hamburg earlier this season. In addition, he earned a rare Champions League start for Bayern in December 2024 while deputising for Neuer, further underlining the trust placed in him during critical moments.
That run in Bayern’s first team ultimately coincided with a shift in the club’s long-term goalkeeping plans. Following Peretz’s temporary spell as cover, Bayern moved swiftly in the January 2025 transfer window to sign Jonas Urbig from Köln. The younger goalkeeper was brought in as a clear successor to Neuer and quickly climbed the depth chart.
How Peretz fell out of Bayern’s plans
Peretz’s future in Munich became increasingly uncertain once Urbig arrived. After initially declining a loan move in January 2025, Peretz found himself pushed further down the pecking order. As the season progressed, Urbig was handed more responsibility, eventually establishing himself as Neuer’s primary understudy and long-term replacement.
That development effectively closed the door for Peretz at Bayern, making a permanent role at the club highly unlikely. A loan move was seen as the most realistic way for him to revive his career, regain match sharpness and reassert his value.
His spell at Hamburg, however, did not unfold as hoped. While he gained some cup minutes, he failed to secure an undisputed starting role, leading to growing frustration. The breakdown in relations ultimately culminated in his refusal to train, a drastic step that signalled his determination to force a move.
Fresh start at St Mary’s
For Southampton, Peretz represents both a short-term solution and a calculated gamble. The Saints have struggled for consistency in goal this season, and the arrival of a keeper with Champions League experience could provide much-needed stability during a crucial phase of their campaign.
If Peretz impresses, the €8 million purchase option gives Southampton a clear pathway to secure him permanently. If not, the financial risk remains limited to the loan fee.
From Peretz’s perspective, the move offers a clean slate. Regular football in a competitive environment could reignite his progress and put him back on track as both a club and international goalkeeper.
With the administrative hurdles now removed, all signs point toward Peretz completing his move to England imminently — a transfer that could prove significant for both Southampton’s ambitions and the goalkeeper’s career revival.
