Shiffrin’s mother reflects on resilience after demanding World Cup stop
Mikaela Shiffrin’s mother, Eileen Shiffrin, has reflected on finding moments of happiness and appreciation during a challenging weekend for her daughter at the FIS World Cup stop in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. The event marked the opening World Cup competition of the 2026 calendar year and brought both highs and lows for the American skiing superstar.
Kranjska Gora has long been a familiar and picturesque venue on the alpine skiing circuit, and despite mixed results on the slopes, the experience still carried meaning for the Shiffrin family. While Mikaela Shiffrin did not dominate as she has so often done in recent seasons, she remained competitive and continued to show why she is one of the sport’s all-time greats.
Eileen Shiffrin shared her reflections on social media following the weekend, posting a series of photos from Slovenia. Her message highlighted the beauty of the location and the spectacle of the racing, rather than focusing solely on results. She described the World Cup races in both giant slalom and slalom as an “amazing show,” adding that Kranjska Gora continues to be a place that never fails to impress. The post conveyed a sense of gratitude and perspective after a demanding few days.
On the snow, Mikaela Shiffrin experienced an end to a remarkable run of victories. Her six-race winning streak came to a halt during the giant slalom, where she finished outside the podium. It was a rare moment of vulnerability for a skier who has dominated the discipline for much of the past decade. However, she quickly bounced back in the slalom event, finishing second and ensuring she remained firmly at the top of both the overall World Cup standings and the slalom rankings.
Although she did not leave Slovenia with a victory, Shiffrin’s performance still underlined her consistency and resilience. Her second-place finish allowed her to maintain an advantage over reigning world champion Camille Rast, reinforcing her status as the benchmark in women’s slalom skiing.
Looking at the bigger picture, Shiffrin’s overall form across the 2025–26 season remains exceptional. Throughout 2025, she delivered one standout performance after another, with very few setbacks. One of the rare exceptions came at the World Championships, where she placed fifth in the individual slalom. Even so, she left those championships with a gold medal from the team combined event, held in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria, adding yet another major achievement to her decorated career.
Her recent run of success began late in the 2024–25 season, when she won the penultimate race of the year. That victory sparked an impressive sequence of five consecutive World Cup wins, culminating in the traditional year-ending race at Semmering in Austria. The streak further strengthened her grip on the sport and demonstrated her ability to perform under sustained pressure.
Shiffrin’s World Cup legacy is already historic. She has claimed five overall World Cup titles, most recently in 2023. While she did not secure the overall crown in 2024, she still emerged as the slalom champion, a discipline she has dominated since first winning the slalom World Cup title in 2013. Her longevity and consistency in that category remain virtually unmatched.
Beyond the current season, Shiffrin’s focus is also firmly set on the upcoming Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics, scheduled to begin on February 6. The Games represent an opportunity for redemption after a difficult Olympic experience in Beijing in 2022, where she finished without a medal for the first time in her Olympic career.
Previously, Shiffrin had enjoyed significant Olympic success, winning two gold medals and a silver at the 2014 Sochi Games, followed by another gold medal at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics. The disappointment of Beijing has only added motivation as she prepares for her next Olympic challenge.
While the Kranjska Gora weekend may not have gone perfectly on the results sheet, Eileen Shiffrin’s reflections captured a broader truth about elite sport: even during tough moments, there is value in the journey, the setting, and the shared experiences along the way.
