Michael Jordan offers his opinion on the Steph Curry vs. Magic Johnson debate.
The long-running debate over the greatest point guard in NBA history has once again taken center stage — this time with Michael Jordan offering a definitive opinion. The Chicago Bulls legend made it clear where he stands when comparing Stephen Curry and Magic Johnson, and he did so without hesitation.
Jordan, who is widely considered the greatest player in NBA history after winning six championships with the Chicago Bulls, has rarely shied away from sharing his views on basketball’s biggest discussions. While the overall GOAT debate often includes names such as LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, this particular conversation focuses specifically on the point guard position — and Jordan believes there is a clear winner.
In 2023, Jordan addressed the topic directly in a text message to sports commentator Stephen A. Smith. Although he acknowledged that labeling anyone the “greatest” is always open to debate, he firmly disagreed with the idea that Curry sits atop the point guard hierarchy.
“Magic Johnson is easily the best point guard of all time,” Jordan stated. He added that Curry is “very close,” but not ahead of Magic. Jordan also emphasized that how one defines the point guard role is crucial to having a serious and meaningful discussion about the comparison.

Jordan’s endorsement of Magic carries weight given the respect he has for the Los Angeles Lakers icon. Magic Johnson, a five-time NBA champion and three-time league MVP, transformed the game in the 1980s with his size, vision, leadership, and versatility. At 6-foot-9, Magic redefined what a point guard could be, orchestrating the Lakers’ fast-paced “Showtime” offense and delivering some of the most memorable performances in NBA Finals history.
On the other hand, Stephen Curry has built a legacy that has dramatically reshaped modern basketball. The Golden State Warriors superstar, a four-time NBA champion and two-time MVP, is widely regarded as the greatest shooter the sport has ever seen. His long-range accuracy and limitless shooting confidence revolutionized offensive strategies across all levels of basketball. Many analysts and fans argue that Curry’s impact on the game — particularly through the three-point revolution — places him at the top of the point guard conversation.
Curry himself has not shied away from the debate. When asked by former NBA player Gilbert Arenas whether he considers himself the greatest point guard ever, the 37-year-old responded confidently: “Yes.” While acknowledging Magic’s remarkable résumé, Curry pointed out that simply being part of this conversation is something he once never imagined.

“Obviously I have to answer it that way,” Curry explained, before praising Magic’s accomplishments. “Magic’s resume is ridiculous.” His tone suggested both self-belief and respect, recognizing that comparisons to Johnson reflect just how far he has come in his own career.
Magic Johnson has also weighed in on the discussion. Speaking on CBS Sports Radio in 2023, he laid out what he believes would be required for Curry to surpass him. Magic pointed to his five championships, three Finals MVP awards, and three regular-season MVPs as benchmarks. He also highlighted his statistical achievements, including ranking first in assists in NBA Finals history, second in playoff double-doubles, first in playoff triple-doubles, and fourth in steals in postseason play.
Magic made it clear that until Curry surpasses those accomplishments, he does not believe the torch has been passed. “If he got more than all those things, he’s the best,” Magic said. “But the last time I checked, he doesn’t.”
The debate ultimately comes down to contrasting styles and eras. Magic Johnson embodied the traditional playmaking point guard, elevating teammates through his passing brilliance and court leadership. Curry, meanwhile, represents the evolution of the position — a scoring threat who stretches defenses beyond their limits and forces opponents to rethink the geometry of the court.
Jordan’s stance reinforces the idea that legacy is measured not only by influence but also by championships, awards, and all-around dominance. While he recognizes Curry’s greatness, he believes Magic’s body of work still sets the standard.
As basketball continues to evolve, so too will the arguments surrounding its legends. Whether fans side with Magic’s résumé, Curry’s revolutionary impact, or Jordan’s definitive opinion, one thing remains certain: the conversation itself is a testament to the extraordinary careers of both players.
