A 51-year-old is set to accept West Brom’s offer as the interim appointment speeds up.
Darren Moore would reportedly struggle to reject the opportunity to return as West Bromwich Albion manager if the club makes an approach, sources have informed Football Insider. The 51-year-old has surfaced as one of the frontrunners to take over in the dugout at The Hawthorns, and it is believed he would eagerly accept the chance to come back should the call arrive.
Moore has been without a managerial role since being dismissed by League One outfit Port Vale at the end of December. According to sources, he is now being considered as a candidate who could bring valuable experience to the setup, potentially working alongside current caretaker boss James Morrison as the club looks to steady the ship.
West Brom are understood to be prioritising an interim appointment in a bid to rescue their faltering campaign. With limited options available for a long-term successor at this stage of the season, the Baggies are focusing on short-term solutions that could stabilise performances and help them avoid further decline.
Moore previously spent a year in charge of West Brom between 2018 and 2019, following a lengthy association with the club as a player. During his playing days, he made more than 100 appearances for the Baggies, cementing a strong connection with the supporters and gaining an in-depth understanding of the club’s culture and expectations.
His initial spell in charge began in April 2018 after Alan Pardew was dismissed with West Brom rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table. Installed as caretaker manager, Moore made an immediate impact by collecting 11 points from six matches. Although the team ultimately suffered relegation at the conclusion of the campaign, his impressive short-term record convinced the hierarchy to hand him the position on a permanent basis.
The following season, Moore guided West Brom into strong contention for an immediate return to the top flight. The team was sitting fourth in the Championship when the club made the unexpected decision to sack him, a move that surprised many observers given their proximity to the promotion places.
Since departing The Hawthorns, Moore’s managerial journey has featured both notable successes and significant setbacks. He achieved promotion with Sheffield Wednesday, demonstrating his capability to guide a side out of League One. More recently, he also secured promotion with Port Vale, reinforcing his credentials as a manager capable of delivering upward momentum.
However, his time at Sheffield Wednesday was not without disappointment, as the Owls eventually suffered relegation. Additionally, his tenure at Huddersfield Town proved short-lived, ending within six months of his appointment. These mixed experiences have shaped a managerial career characterised by highs and lows in equal measure.
Moore’s most recent position at Port Vale concluded with his dismissal while the club was bottom of the League One standings. Since that departure, he has yet to secure another managerial role. Despite this, his enduring bond with West Brom and familiarity with the inner workings of the club could play a decisive role if the board opts to entrust him with the responsibility of preserving their Championship status.
The Baggies currently find themselves in a precarious situation and are keen to inject stability into the team as quickly as possible. With the season approaching its critical phase, the leadership group recognises the urgency of appointing someone capable of galvanising the squad and restoring belief.
Moore is not the only former manager under consideration. Football Insider previously reported that West Brom are also weighing up the possibility of reappointing Tony Mowbray on a short-term contract running until the end of the season. The club’s preference appears to lean toward an interim solution rather than committing immediately to a long-term managerial project.
Preliminary discussions have reportedly taken place regarding the potential return of the 62-year-old Mowbray. Should an agreement be reached, it would mark his third spell at the helm of the Midlands club. Mowbray most recently managed West Brom toward the end of last season before being dismissed, paving the way for Ryan Mason’s appointment.
Since then, West Brom’s board has struggled to find stability, with two managerial choices failing to deliver the desired results. This instability has brought the club to a crossroads, where the decision may ultimately come down to selecting between two familiar faces with prior experience at The Hawthorns.
The prospect of Moore and Mowbray effectively competing for a return adds another layer of intrigue to the situation. Both individuals understand the club’s history, expectations, and supporter base, which could prove advantageous during a challenging period.
For Moore, the opportunity to return would represent a chance to rebuild his reputation and re-establish himself in the Championship. For West Brom, it would mean placing faith in a figure who has previously demonstrated his commitment to the club both as a player and a manager.
As the campaign continues to unfold, the Baggies must act decisively if they are to avoid slipping further down the table. Whether they opt for Moore, Mowbray, or another candidate entirely, the priority remains clear: secure enough points to maintain their Championship status and lay the groundwork for a more stable future.
