Report: Cardinale encounters a ‘strategic crossroads’ in NBA Europe plan amid Olimpia’s participation.
Gerry Cardinale is reportedly at a pivotal decision point regarding RedBird Capital Partners’ plans to bring an NBA Europe franchise to Milan.
According to RealOlimpiaMilano (via MilanNews), the group has two main options. The first is to enter the city’s basketball scene by purchasing Olimpia Milano, with the estimated cost of an acquisition said to be between €100m and €150m. However, negotiations could prove complicated, particularly due to the involvement of the heirs of Giorgio Armani.
The alternative would be to create a brand-new team — potentially branded as AC Milan Basket — from the ground up. While this route may be less expensive, it carries risks, including splitting the existing fan base and facing potential hurdles related to entry into Italy’s domestic leagues.
The broader reasoning behind both scenarios is the expectation of a more closed and financially sustainable NBA Europe structure, where franchise values could rise significantly thanks to new broadcasting agreements and the commercial strength of modern arenas.
A crucial element in the project could be the San Donato Milanese site, still owned by AC Milan, where a 20,000-seat arena and entertainment complex might be developed. The plan could involve a gradual rebranding over a three-to-five-year period.
With the deadline to formally express interest in the NBA’s European expansion approaching, Cardinale and RedBird must settle on a clear strategy soon.
