Wayne Rooney advises Celtic manager candidate against accepting Premier League offer.
As Celtic F.C. prepare for a potentially significant summer rebuild, uncertainty surrounding their managerial plans is beginning to grow. One of the most discussed names connected with the vacancy at Celtic Park is Robbie Keane.
However, the possibility of the Irishman taking charge in Glasgow is complicated by mixed reactions among the club’s supporters. Some sections of the fanbase remain unconvinced that Keane would be the right choice to lead the Scottish giants forward. Despite these reservations, the former striker has still emerged as one of the leading candidates linked with the job.
Yet Celtic’s pursuit of Keane may soon face an unexpected obstacle. Developments in North London involving Tottenham Hotspur F.C. could play a decisive role in determining where the current Ferencvárosi TC manager ends up next.
Tottenham’s Struggles Could Complicate Celtic’s Plans
The situation at Tottenham is becoming increasingly unstable, and their struggles in the Premier League could force the club to consider drastic changes. Should the crisis deepen, the North London side might look toward Keane as a potential solution to their problems.
If that scenario unfolds, Celtic may be forced to rethink their managerial shortlist much earlier than expected. The Scottish club could find themselves scrambling to identify alternative candidates should Keane become Tottenham’s preferred option.
Because of his strong history with Spurs during his playing career, Keane would represent a sentimental appointment for the London club. That connection could make him a natural candidate if Tottenham decide they need a figure who understands the club and its culture.
This potential chain of events leaves Celtic facing uncertainty as they attempt to finalise their managerial plans for the upcoming season.
Rooney Delivers Clear Warning About Tottenham Job
Former England captain Wayne Rooney has already weighed in on the situation and delivered a strong message to his former teammate.
Speaking on The Overlap, Rooney advised Keane to avoid accepting a role at Tottenham under the current circumstances.
“If I were Robbie Keane, there’s no way I would leave a job to go to Tottenham,” Rooney stated during the discussion.
His comments suggest that he believes the role at Spurs currently carries significant risk. Rooney’s blunt warning reflects concerns about the club’s precarious position and the potential damage that taking such a job could have on Keane’s managerial career.
For Celtic, Rooney’s remarks highlight how fragile the situation could become if Tottenham seriously pursue the Irish coach.
Celtic Facing a Potential Turning Point
Rooney’s intervention emphasises what could prove to be a major crossroads for Celtic. If Keane becomes Tottenham’s target, the Scottish champions could suddenly lose one of the main contenders for their managerial position.
Although Keane only spent a short time playing for Celtic on loan during his career, he still maintains a connection to the club. Nevertheless, his legendary status at Tottenham means that a call from Spurs would likely be extremely difficult to ignore.
At the same time, Tottenham’s current predicament adds a layer of uncertainty to the situation. The club is reportedly struggling near the bottom of the table and faces the possibility of relegation if their form does not improve.
Their troubles are widely seen as the consequence of a controversial decision made earlier in the year.
Fallout From Ange Postecoglou’s Departure
Tottenham’s problems have intensified following the dismissal of former manager Ange Postecoglou. The Australian coach, who previously enjoyed success with Celtic, had delivered European silverware before being shown the door.
His departure shortly after leading Spurs to victory in the UEFA Europa League raised eyebrows among many observers.
Since then, the team’s fortunes have deteriorated, leaving them embroiled in a difficult relegation battle. The responsibility for reversing that decline currently rests with Igor Tudor, but speculation is growing that the Croatian coach could soon lose his position.
If Tottenham decide to make another managerial change, Keane could become a leading candidate to step in and attempt to stabilise the club.
Mixed Reactions Among Celtic Supporters
Interestingly, not every Celtic supporter would be disappointed if Keane ultimately decided to take the Tottenham job instead of moving to Glasgow.
Some fans have expressed doubts about whether he possesses the experience required to manage a club with Celtic’s expectations and pressure. For those supporters, Tottenham’s intervention could effectively remove the dilemma facing the club’s board.
Nevertheless, Rooney’s comments underline how dangerous the Tottenham opportunity might be for Keane personally.
Debate Continues Over Spurs Appointment
During the same conversation on The Overlap, former Arsenal striker Ian Wright suggested that Tottenham should consider appointing Keane sooner rather than later.
“You know something,” Wright said. “I think Tottenham… what are they waiting for? If it was me, I would bring in Robbie Keane.”
Rooney, however, strongly disagreed with that approach. The former Manchester United star believes Tottenham’s situation is so unstable that taking the job now would be a major gamble.
“I think they’re going to go down,” Rooney warned.
“That’s why I’m saying that if I was Robbie Keane, I wouldn’t go there. I wouldn’t leave my current job to take that position.”
Rooney went on to suggest that unemployed managers might be more suitable candidates to take on the risk.
“If you’re someone like Tim Sherwood or another coach without a job, then you might consider stepping in,” he explained. “But if I was Robbie Keane, there’s absolutely no way I’d leave a job to go to Tottenham right now.”
