Pompey manager expresses ‘frustration’ as attacker battles to secure Fratton future.
Portsmouth F.C. head coach John Mousinho has admitted there is a sense of frustration within the club as young forward Harry Clout continues to fight for his long-term future at Fratton Park.
The 19-year-old attacker, who made his senior debut during Pompey’s FA Cup defeat to Wycombe Wanderers F.C. in January 2025, finds himself at a crossroads. Having made just one appearance for the first team, he is now among a group of eight players whose contracts are due to expire at the end of the current season, leaving his future uncertain.

Early Promise After First Professional Deal
Clout had been regarded as a promising talent within the club’s academy system. He signed his first professional contract in July, becoming the only player from Sam Hudson’s under-18 squad to be retained following their graduation. That decision highlighted the belief Portsmouth had in his potential to develop into a first-team player.
However, despite that early optimism, his progression has not gone as planned. The young attacker has struggled to gain consistent playing time, particularly during a series of loan moves aimed at accelerating his development.
Difficult Loan Spells Limit Progress
Over the course of the campaign, Clout was sent out on loan to several non-league sides, including Farnborough F.C., Welling United F.C., and Havant & Waterlooville F.C.. Unfortunately, these spells did not deliver the regular minutes or impact that had been hoped for.
With the non-league registration window now closed, the possibility of securing another temporary move has been removed. As a result, Clout will remain at Portsmouth for the remainder of the season, focusing on training and development rather than gaining match experience elsewhere.
Despite the setbacks, Mousinho believes there is still value in keeping the player at the club while a decision is made regarding his future.
Mousinho Reflects on Missed Opportunities
Speaking about the situation, Mousinho acknowledged that both the player and the club would have preferred to see more game time during those loan spells. He explained that a range of circumstances affected each move, ultimately preventing Clout from establishing himself.
The Pompey boss admitted that it has been frustrating, particularly for a young player in his first professional season. Ideally, players in Clout’s position would make a tangible impact while out on loan, but that has not materialized in this case.
Mousinho also revealed that the club had explored the possibility of arranging another loan before the deadline. However, he emphasized that remaining at Portsmouth is not necessarily a negative outcome, as it allows the coaching staff to work closely with the player on a daily basis.
Benefits of Staying at Fratton Park

While loan moves can provide valuable match experience, Mousinho pointed out that there are advantages to keeping Clout within the club environment. Training regularly with the first team enables the staff to monitor his progress more closely and provide direct guidance.
He highlighted that when players are out on loan, the club does not have the same level of oversight. By contrast, having Clout on-site ensures that he remains integrated within the squad and continues to develop under the supervision of the coaching team.
Mousinho acknowledged that there are both positives and negatives to each approach, but believes the current arrangement still offers meaningful opportunities for improvement.
Limited Appearances Across the Season
Clout’s struggles for game time are reflected in his statistics for the season. Across his three loan spells, he has made just 12 appearances in total. His time with Havant & Waterlooville was particularly limited, as he did not feature in a single first-team squad during that stint.
These challenges have made it difficult for him to build momentum or showcase his abilities consistently, adding to the uncertainty surrounding his future at the club.
Other Youngsters Also Under Review
Clout is not the only young player facing an uncertain future at Portsmouth. Reuben Swann, another promising prospect, was recently recalled from his loan spell at Havant & Waterlooville in order to strengthen the squad.
He was included on the bench during Pompey’s 3-1 victory over Millwall F.C., although he did not take to the field. Like Clout, Swann is also out of contract in the summer, and Mousinho is currently assessing his progress in training before making a decision on his future.
Several Players Nearing Contract Expiry
In addition to these youngsters, a number of senior players are also approaching the end of their contracts. Connor Ogilvie, Marlon Pack, Andre Dozzell, Zak Swanson, Jordan Archer, and Toby Steward could all become free agents at the end of the season.
This situation adds further complexity to Portsmouth’s planning, as the club must evaluate multiple players while preparing for the next campaign.
Focus on Development Within the Squad

For now, Clout’s focus will be on making the most of his time training with the first team. Mousinho believes the current setup provides a solid environment for players who are not regularly involved in matches, allowing them to continue improving their skills and understanding of the game.
The manager noted that Portsmouth currently has a strong training group, which can benefit players like Clout as they look to develop and prove their value. Although his first professional season has not unfolded as hoped, the coming months still offer an opportunity for the young attacker to demonstrate his potential and secure his place at the club.
Southampton have unearthed a special talent worthy of George Best comparisons
Remarkable developments are unfolding at St Mary’s, where Southampton are enjoying a sensational run of form. The Saints are currently unbeaten in 14 matches and are edging ever closer to a place in the FA Cup semi-finals. Amid this resurgence, they appear to have discovered a genuine superstar in Shea Charles.

A goal that defines world-class quality
The strike that Shea Charles produced against Oxford United on Saturday was nothing short of extraordinary. It was the kind of goal that many players can only dream of scoring once in their careers. Whether he ever replicates such a moment again is irrelevant, because players of true world-class calibre are capable of producing moments like that when it matters most.
From distance, with power and precision, the effort flew into the top corner in a manner reminiscent of Roberto Carlos at his very best. It was a goal that captured attention instantly and left fans and pundits alike in awe.
A week that elevated his reputation
Incredibly, that spectacular goal was not even the standout moment of Charles’ week. That alone says everything about the level he is beginning to reach. Within days, he delivered another performance that underlined his growing reputation as one of the most exciting young players in the game.
Facing Italy on their own turf is always a daunting challenge. Doing so in a World Cup play-off, against elite midfielders such as Sandro Tonali, Manuel Locatelli, and Nicolò Barella, only raises the difficulty further.
For Northern Ireland, it was a test of the highest order. Yet Charles did not just cope—he excelled. His performance made seasoned internationals look ordinary, showcasing a composure and confidence that belied his age.
Conquering elite opposition
Taking on Italy in such circumstances is often compared to scaling an impossible peak. The quality, experience, and tactical intelligence within their squad make them one of the toughest teams in world football.
However, Charles rose to the occasion magnificently. Against players operating at the very highest level, he demonstrated that he belongs in that company. His display was not just solid; it was dominant, marking him out as a player capable of competing with Europe’s finest.
Eleven seconds that showcased brilliance
One particular passage of play encapsulated everything that makes Shea Charles such an exceptional talent. Around the hour mark, he produced a sequence that lasted just 11 seconds but spoke volumes about his ability.
Receiving the ball under pressure in his own half, he immediately showed composure. A quick one-two with Ethan Galbraith allowed him to bypass Locatelli, creating space where there seemed to be none.
Driving forward into a congested area, he faced increasing pressure. Locatelli recovered and attempted to challenge again, but Charles shrugged him off with ease, displaying remarkable strength and balance.
Strength, control, and composure
As the move continued, Mateo Retegui tracked back to help his team defensively. Yet even his efforts proved ineffective, as Charles brushed him aside with minimal fuss.
A delicate touch then left Barella momentarily disoriented, creating a crucial yard of space. Sensing the danger, Tonali stepped forward to close him down, while Retegui continued his pursuit.
At this point, Charles accelerated, gliding forward with purpose. A subtle shift in body position sent Tonali the wrong way, effectively taking him out of the equation.
A moment that symbolised his growth
Although the move ultimately ended with a simple pass to Terry Devlin, the true significance lay in what had come before. In those brief seconds, Charles had outplayed multiple top-level opponents with a combination of intelligence, strength, and technical skill.
It was a moment that perfectly illustrated his development over the course of the season. He is no longer just a promising young player; he is becoming a complete midfielder capable of influencing games at the highest level.
Built around a rising star
Credit must also be given to former Southampton manager Will Still, who recognised Charles’ potential early and made him the focal point of his team. Until injury struck during a match against Blackburn Rovers, Charles had been an ever-present figure in the side.
By building the team around him, Still allowed the young midfielder to express himself and develop his game. That trust has clearly paid dividends, as Charles has flourished in a central role.
Recognition from top-level figures
Even Italy’s manager, the famously tough Gennaro Gattuso, acknowledged the impact Charles had on the match. He admitted that his team had been surprised by Northern Ireland’s approach and had not anticipated such a composed and technically proficient performance.
It was a telling admission and one that highlights how Charles is beginning to earn respect at the highest levels of the game.
Versatility that sets him apart
According to Southampton captain Jack Stephens, Charles possesses the rare ability to excel in multiple roles. He is comfortable operating as a defensive midfielder, shielding the back line and breaking up opposition attacks.
At the same time, he can function as a box-to-box presence, contributing both defensively and offensively. When required, he is equally capable of pushing further forward into an attacking midfield role, where his creativity and vision come into play.
Remarkably, his skill set even allows him to drop into central defence if needed, underlining just how adaptable he is.
The challenge of keeping hold of him
For Southampton, the biggest issue is no longer how to utilise Shea Charles, but how to ensure he remains at the club. His performances have not gone unnoticed, and it is only a matter of time before interest from bigger clubs intensifies.
With his stock rising rapidly, retaining him will become an increasingly difficult task. The club must now focus on building a project that convinces him his future lies at St Mary’s.
A star in the making
Everything about Charles’ recent performances points to a player on the verge of stardom. From breathtaking goals to dominant displays against elite opposition, he is ticking every box required of a top-level footballer.
If he continues on this trajectory, comparisons to legends like George Best may not seem so far-fetched after all.
For now, Southampton can enjoy having such a talent in their ranks. But as his reputation grows, so too will the challenge of keeping hold of one of the brightest young stars in the game.
Bournemouth to decide on permanent Araujo transfer to Celtic as the player reaches a decision
Celtic may still complete a permanent transfer for on-loan defender Julian Araujo, with AFC Bournemouth reportedly willing to part ways with the player when the transfer window reopens this summer.
Sources indicate that Araujo himself is open to the move, having enjoyed his spell in Glasgow so far. The right-back has settled well at Celtic Park, and there is mutual interest between the player and the Scottish champions in extending his stay beyond the current loan arrangement.
Importantly, Bournemouth are not expected to obstruct any deal should Araujo decide he wants to remain in Scotland on a permanent basis. This willingness from all parties involved could pave the way for a smooth negotiation process in the coming months.
Celtic Keen to Strengthen Right-Back Options
One of the key motivations behind Celtic’s interest in securing Araujo long-term is their desire to bolster competition in the right-back position. Currently, Alistair Johnston is the first-choice option in that role, but the club are determined to avoid over-reliance on a single player.
Araujo has already made a positive impression during his time in the Scottish Premiership, with supporters quickly warming to his performances. Given that Celtic are expected to undergo a significant squad rebuild ahead of next season, he could become an important figure in the team’s long-term plans.
His attacking output and defensive contributions have shown promise, suggesting he could develop into a reliable option in a demanding role.
Johnston’s Return Provides Timely Boost
Celtic recently received encouraging news as Johnston returned to full training at Lennoxtown following a prolonged spell on the sidelines. His absence had been keenly felt, with the Canadian international missing several months of action due to injury.
He has not featured since the Europa League victory over SK Sturm Graz in October, and his last appearance prior to that came against FC Kairat Almaty in August.
Last season, Johnston played a crucial role in Celtic’s success, contributing significantly with goals and assists from the right-back position. However, his injury struggles this term have forced the club to cope largely without him.
Although his return is a welcome development, Celtic are expected to manage his workload carefully to avoid any recurrence of fitness issues. This cautious approach further highlights the importance of having dependable cover in his position.
Araujo Offers Valuable Depth and Competition
The addition of Araujo on a permanent basis would provide Celtic with the depth they require at right-back. His performances so far have demonstrated his ability to contribute both defensively and offensively, making him a viable alternative to Johnston.
With concerns lingering over Johnston’s injury record, having another capable option in the squad is viewed as essential. Celtic’s management are keen to ensure they are not left short-handed again, particularly during a demanding season that could involve domestic and European commitments.
Araujo’s adaptability and growing confidence in the team setup make him an attractive option as the club looks to strengthen key areas.
Silas Andersen Also on Celtic’s Radar
In addition to their interest in Araujo, Celtic are reportedly keeping tabs on midfielder Silas Andersen as they plan for the upcoming transfer window.
The 21-year-old, who currently plays for BK Hacken, had previously been linked with both Celtic and Rangers FC during the January transfer window.
Although Andersen recently signed a new contract with his current club, Celtic remain interested in bringing him to Glasgow. However, any potential move is likely to be complicated by the terms of his new deal.
Champions League Qualification Could Be Decisive
A major factor influencing Celtic’s ability to secure players like Andersen will be whether they qualify for the Champions League next season.
Participation in Europe’s top competition would provide a significant financial boost, enabling the club to fund their summer transfer activity more effectively. Without that income, pursuing high-value targets could prove challenging.
Reports suggest that BK Hacken would demand a fee well in excess of £5 million to consider selling Andersen. As a result, Celtic’s hopes of completing such a deal may hinge on their European qualification status.
A Crucial Summer Ahead for Celtic
With a squad overhaul expected, Celtic are preparing for a pivotal transfer window. Securing Araujo on a permanent deal could represent an important step in strengthening the team’s defensive options.
At the same time, their pursuit of additional targets like Andersen highlights the club’s ambition to build a competitive squad capable of sustaining success both domestically and in Europe.
Ultimately, much will depend on how the remainder of the season unfolds, particularly in terms of Champions League qualification. If Celtic can secure their place among Europe’s elite, it could unlock greater opportunities in the transfer market and shape the club’s future direction.
