A special artistic tribute has been revealed to honour Mikaela Shiffrin and her extraordinary milestone of 100 World Cup victories, marking one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of alpine skiing.

Exactly one year after that historic moment on the famous Kandahar G.A. Agnelli slope, the Sestriere Ski World Cup Organizing Committee, in partnership with the Municipality of Sestriere, has officially unveiled a sculpture dedicated to celebrating Shiffrin’s incredible accomplishment. The American star reached the landmark figure at Colle, within the renowned Vialattea ski area, where she surpassed the historic 100-win mark in Alpine Ski World Cup competition.

February 23, 2025, remains a date permanently engraved in skiing history. On that day, racing through the demanding slalom course in Sestriere, Shiffrin secured her 100th victory in the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, setting a new benchmark for excellence on one of the sport’s most iconic stages. Her performance not only demonstrated her unmatched skill and consistency but also elevated her status as one of the greatest athletes the discipline has ever seen.

Now, on Sunday, March 29, just over a year after that unforgettable triumph, the town of Sestriere has ensured that the moment will live on through a striking piece of art. What was once a fleeting yet powerful sporting achievement has been transformed into a permanent symbol, capturing the emotion and significance of that day for future generations to appreciate.

The creation of the artwork was commissioned by the organizing committee, working closely with Shiffrin’s team to ensure that the final piece would truly reflect the magnitude of her achievement. The task was entrusted to Maurizio Perron, an internationally recognised artist known for his ability to translate powerful ideas into visually compelling forms. His involvement brought an additional layer of prestige and craftsmanship to the project, ensuring that the sculpture would stand as a fitting tribute to such a historic accomplishment.

Reflecting on the moment, Gualtiero Brasso, President of the Organizing Committee, described the emotions surrounding Shiffrin’s victory as unforgettable. He recalled the excitement of witnessing her triumph in person, emphasising how special it was to see such a milestone achieved on their home slopes. For him and many others, it was not simply another race result but a defining moment that crowned an already memorable series of World Cup events held in Sestriere.

Brasso explained that the decision to commemorate the achievement with a physical artwork was driven by a desire to create a lasting legacy. Rather than allowing the moment to exist only in records and memories, the committee wanted to establish something tangible that would continue to inspire visitors and fans alike. Thanks to the collaboration between Shiffrin, her team, and Perron, that vision has been realised in the form of a sculpture that captures both the significance and the spirit of the occasion. On behalf of the Sporting Club Sestrieres, Brasso expressed pride in donating the piece to the local municipality, ensuring it would remain a permanent part of the town’s identity.

The Mayor of Sestriere, Gianni Poncet, also highlighted the importance of the tribute, describing it as another valuable addition to the town’s rich sporting heritage. Sestriere has long been associated with winter sports excellence, and Shiffrin’s achievement has further strengthened that reputation. According to Poncet, such a historic milestone deserved more than just recognition in statistics; it required a meaningful and lasting representation that could be shared with the community and visitors from around the world.

He praised the idea of immortalising the 100-win milestone through art, noting that it was an ideal way to honour both the athlete and the location where history was made. The artwork itself has been carefully designed to endure the challenging environmental conditions of the mountain setting. Constructed from stainless steel, it is built to withstand harsh weather, including extreme temperatures and exposure at an altitude of 2,035 metres. The surface has been treated with a satin finish, enhancing its visual appeal while also adding texture and depth to the structure.

In terms of design, the concept is both simple and powerful. The sculpture prominently features the number 100, symbolising Shiffrin’s record-breaking achievement. Supporting this figure are two crossed skis, a direct reference to the sport that defined the milestone. The piece also includes the inscription “MIK,” a subtle yet recognisable nod to the athlete herself.

One of the most distinctive elements of the sculpture is the central zero within the number 100. This feature has been creatively inspired by the stylised form of the FIS Crystal Globe, the iconic trophy awarded to World Cup champions. By incorporating this detail, the artwork not only celebrates the milestone itself but also connects it to the broader legacy of success and excellence associated with the World Cup circuit.

At present, the sculpture is on display at the Sestriere Tourist Office, where it can be viewed by visitors and fans eager to witness the tribute up close. However, this is only a temporary location. Plans are already in place for the artwork to be installed permanently during the summer months, when it will be mounted on a large rock in a carefully chosen position.

The final location has been selected to maximise both its visual impact and its symbolic significance. Once installed, the sculpture will be set against the backdrop of the Kandahar G.A. Agnelli slope, the very site where Shiffrin achieved her historic 100th victory. This placement will create a powerful connection between the artwork and the moment it commemorates, allowing viewers to stand in the same setting where history was made.

Through this combination of sport and art, Sestriere has ensured that Mikaela Shiffrin’s achievement will continue to resonate far beyond the day it occurred. The sculpture stands not only as a tribute to one athlete’s extraordinary career but also as a celebration of the passion, dedication, and excellence that define alpine skiing at its highest level.
