Speaking from Los Angeles on April 7, the American skiing icon reflected on her attempted comeback at the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics, which ended in devastating fashion just two months earlier. The accident, which occurred during the Olympic downhill event in Cortina on February 8, resulted in serious injuries that nearly led to the amputation of her leg.
At 41 years old, Vonn had been aiming to cap off an inspiring return to competitive skiing with an Olympic medal after being away from the sport for nearly six years. However, her hopes were dashed when she suffered a high-speed fall that caused multiple fractures in her left leg, abruptly ending her campaign.
Despite the traumatic outcome, Vonn made it clear in an interview with ESPN that she does not regret her decision to compete again at the highest level. Reflecting on the moment, she admitted that although the crash came as a result of a small mistake, she fully accepts the consequences and would make the same choice if given another opportunity.
She emphasized that she felt physically strong and mentally prepared going into the event, regardless of her age. According to Vonn, she believed she was ready to compete and perform at an elite level, and that confidence remains unchanged even after the accident.
While acknowledging the immense challenges she has faced since the crash, including what she described as some very low moments, she reiterated her stance that the experience does not fill her with regret. Instead, she views it as part of the risks that come with competing in a demanding and dangerous sport like alpine skiing.
Following the accident, Vonn underwent several surgeries in Italy in an effort to repair the damage to her leg. After returning to the United States, she required an additional operation, which ultimately helped doctors prevent the need for amputation. The seriousness of her injuries highlights just how close she came to a far more life-altering outcome.
Her Olympic disappointment came after an already difficult build-up to the Games. Prior to competing, Vonn had suffered torn ligaments in her left knee as a result of another crash, adding to the physical challenges she faced on her road back to the slopes.
In the weeks since the Olympic incident, her recovery process has been slow and demanding. Vonn shared that she was initially confined to a wheelchair during the early stages of her rehabilitation. However, she has since made some progress and is now able to walk short distances with the assistance of crutches.
Discussing her current situation, Vonn spoke candidly about how her priorities have shifted. She explained that what matters most to her now is regaining a sense of normalcy in her daily life. Simple tasks that many people take for granted—such as taking a shower, carrying items, or preparing breakfast—have become significant challenges during her recovery.
She admitted that she is still unable to perform many of these everyday activities independently, underscoring the extent of the impact her injuries have had on her life beyond sport.
Looking ahead, Vonn acknowledged that her future in competitive skiing remains uncertain. She openly stated that there is a possibility she may never race again, given the severity of her injuries and the long road to recovery that lies ahead.
However, she has not yet made any definitive decisions regarding retirement. Vonn explained that she is still in the process of coming to terms with everything that has happened over the past several weeks. After dedicating the last two years of her life to preparing for the Olympics, the abrupt end to her season and potentially her career has been difficult to fully process.
For now, her focus remains on recovery and reflection. She indicated that she needs more time to understand and accept the reality of her situation before making any final choices about her future in the sport.
Ultimately, Vonn’s message is one of resilience and acceptance. Despite the pain, setbacks, and uncertainty she faces, she stands by her decision to return to the Olympic stage, demonstrating the mindset of a champion who is willing to embrace both the triumphs and the risks that come with pursuing greatness.
