Sky Sports reports Birmingham City’s push to secure the signature of the “amazing” former Champions League forward.
According to Sky Sports, Birmingham City have emerged as serious contenders to sign Liel Abada during the upcoming summer transfer window. The winger, who currently plays for Charlotte FC, is attracting attention as his contract is due to run until the end of 2026, although there is an option in place that could extend his stay by a further year.
The Blues’ interest signals their intent to strengthen attacking areas ahead of next season, especially after showing encouraging signs toward the end of the current campaign. Competition for Abada’s signature is expected, with Norwich City also monitoring his situation closely.
Strong finish gives Birmingham momentum
Birmingham City concluded their first season back in the Championship in respectable fashion, finishing 10th in the table. Considering the step up in quality following promotion, the achievement reflects a solid campaign overall.
Their form at the end of the season was particularly promising. The team went unbeaten in their final five matches, wrapping things up with a 1-1 draw away to Portsmouth. That late run helped build optimism around the squad and suggested that progress is being made under current leadership.
Manager Chris Davies expressed pride in what his side had accomplished. He acknowledged the challenges of adapting to the Championship, noting that the level of competition is far higher than what they experienced previously. Despite those hurdles, finishing in the top half of the table represented a significant step forward for the club.
Davies also pointed out that it had been a decade since Birmingham last achieved such a points total, underlining the importance of this season as a foundation for future ambitions.
Managerial uncertainty and recruitment focus
Although the campaign ended on a positive note, there had been some uncertainty surrounding Davies’ position. Reports indicated that the club had approached Thomas Frank, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur, about potentially taking over at the end of April.
However, Davies now appears likely to remain in charge heading into the summer. If that is the case, the focus will shift firmly toward recruitment, as Birmingham aim to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion.
Bringing in players with attacking quality will be a priority, and Abada has emerged as a key target in that regard.
Competition builds for Liel Abada
Interest in Abada is not limited to Birmingham. Norwich City are also in the race, meaning the Blues could face a battle to secure his services. Any potential deal may be complicated by Charlotte FC’s contractual option, which gives the MLS side additional leverage in negotiations.
Despite limited starts this season, the 24-year-old has shown flashes of his ability. His reputation was built during his time at Celtic, where he became a highly effective attacking outlet.
Scout Jacek Kulig previously described him as “amazing,” highlighting the impact he made during his spell in Scotland.
Proven track record in Scotland
During his time at Celtic, Abada enjoyed considerable success. He played a key role in helping the club secure three Scottish Premiership titles and consistently contributed in the final third.
Across 112 appearances for the Glasgow side, he was involved in 51 goals, combining both scoring and creative output. His ability to deliver in big moments made him a valuable asset in a dominant team.
Before that, he also impressed at Maccabi Petah Tikva, where he recorded 30 goal involvements in 76 appearances. Since moving to Charlotte FC, he has added a further 20 contributions in 76 games, maintaining a steady level of productivity.
Potential impact at Birmingham City
Although Abada has yet to feature in the Championship, his experience in other competitive leagues suggests he could adapt quickly. Notably, he has also played five matches in the UEFA Champions League, giving him exposure to elite-level football.
For Birmingham, signing a player with that background would represent a significant boost. His pace, direct style, and eye for goal could add a new dimension to their attack.
If Davies is to guide the Blues toward a promotion push next season, bringing in a player capable of both scoring and creating chances will be essential. Abada fits that profile and could prove to be a key addition if a deal is completed.
A crucial summer ahead
As Birmingham City prepare for the next phase of their development, the upcoming transfer window will be vital. The club has already demonstrated resilience and growth, but further reinforcements are needed to bridge the gap to the Championship’s top sides.
The pursuit of Liel Abada highlights their ambition. Whether they can win the race for his signature remains to be seen, but their involvement alone signals a clear intent to compete at a higher level.
With momentum from a strong finish and a manager likely to remain in place, the Blues are positioning themselves for an important summer that could shape their future trajectory.
