Former City manager Manning departs from his role at Huddersfield.
Former Norwich City head coach Liam Manning has officially stepped away from his position at Huddersfield Town by mutual consent, explaining that his family must come first following a prolonged period of compassionate leave.
Manning had initially been granted time away from his responsibilities with the Terriers back in March due to ongoing personal circumstances connected to the heartbreaking death of his newborn son, Theo, in October 2024.
Since taking leave from the club, Manning and his family have continued to remain in Norfolk, and Huddersfield have now confirmed that the former City boss will not be returning to his role at the Accu Stadium after discussions with senior figures at the club.
In a statement released through Huddersfield’s official channels, Manning explained the reasons behind his decision and admitted it had not been an easy choice to make.
“Stepping down from Huddersfield Town has been a difficult decision, but one I feel is best for the Club, my family and myself at this time,” Manning said.
The 40-year-old also expressed his gratitude towards the supporters and everyone connected with the club for the compassion they have shown during an incredibly difficult period in his personal life.
“It has been a privilege to manage this team and be a part of this community,” he continued. “I am grateful to the fans for their support and compassion in recent months.”
Manning went on to praise the understanding shown by the club throughout his absence and thanked key figures within the organisation for their backing and professionalism during a challenging time.

“The understanding and care from the Club has gone above and beyond, and I would like to thank Kevin Nagle, Chris Markham, the wider First Team staff and players for their professionalism, commitment and dedication in my absence,” he added.
Although his spell in West Yorkshire ultimately proved shorter than anticipated, Manning insisted he remained thankful for the opportunity to lead the club and wished Huddersfield every success moving forward.
“Although my time was shorter than I had hoped, I am grateful for the opportunity Kevin Nagle entrusted in me and wish nothing but success for Huddersfield Town moving forwards,” Manning concluded.
Short Spell In Charge Of Huddersfield
Manning only arrived at Huddersfield earlier this year after leaving Norwich City following a brief and difficult tenure at Carrow Road.
His time in charge of Norwich came to an end in November after overseeing just 17 matches in all competitions. He was subsequently replaced in the dugout by Philippe Clement.
Following his departure from Norwich, Manning took over at Huddersfield in January as the Terriers sought fresh direction under owner Kevin Nagle.
Despite the difficult personal circumstances he was dealing with away from football, Manning remained highly respected within the club for the professionalism and honesty he demonstrated throughout his time in charge.
Kevin Nagle Pays Tribute
Huddersfield owner Kevin Nagle also released an emotional statement following confirmation of Manning’s departure, paying tribute to the former head coach for his openness and commitment during an extremely challenging chapter in his life.
“I want to pay huge tribute to Liam today,” Nagle said.
The American businessman stressed that family must always come before football and backed Manning’s decision to step away from management at this stage.
“Stepping away from this role is the correct decision for him and his family, and that comes before absolutely everything else,” he explained.
Nagle also praised Manning’s honesty in conversations with the club hierarchy and highlighted the respect he had shown towards Huddersfield throughout his short stay.
“His openness and honesty about this situation have been second-to-none,” Nagle continued.
Although Manning’s time at the Accu Stadium lasted only a matter of months, Nagle insisted the former Norwich boss had made a lasting impression on those within the club.
“His time at Huddersfield Town had been relatively short but he has shown a deep care and respect for the Club in how he has dealt with us,” he added.
The Huddersfield owner concluded by making it clear that Manning would always remain welcome at the club in the future.
“He will always be a Terrier and is always welcome back at Accu Stadium,” Nagle said.
Manning’s departure now leaves Huddersfield searching for another new direction ahead of the upcoming campaign, while the football community continues to rally around the manager and his family following an immensely difficult period in their lives.
