Hull City owner is ‘furious’ about the unresolved issues concerning the Southampton-Middlesbrough play-off final.
Acun Ilıcalı Speaks Out On Southampton-Middlesbrough ‘Spygate’ Chaos As Hull City A.F.C. Await Play-Off Final Opponents
Hull City owner Acun Ilıcalı has admitted he would be “furious” if the allegations surrounding the Championship play-off spying controversy were proven true, as uncertainty over the situation continues to impact his club ahead of the Wembley final.

Hull City chairman Acun Ilicali
The Tigers booked their place in the Championship play-off final after overcoming Millwall F.C., but they are still waiting to discover whether they will face Southampton F.C. or Middlesbrough F.C. at Wembley.
Although Southampton defeated Middlesbrough after extra time at St Mary’s on Tuesday night to secure their place in the final on the pitch, the outcome of the tie remains under scrutiny because of the growing “Spygate” scandal currently engulfing the Championship play-offs.
Southampton were formally charged by the English Football League following allegations that a member of their staff was caught filming Middlesbrough training sessions in the days leading up to the first leg of the semi-final clash.
The case has now been passed to an independent disciplinary commission, which possesses extensive powers regarding potential punishments should Southampton be found guilty of breaching league regulations.
Among the possible sanctions reportedly being discussed is expulsion from the play-offs entirely, something Middlesbrough are actively pushing for as part of their complaint.
Because of the ongoing disciplinary process, Hull remain unable to fully prepare for the final in the normal way.
The uncertainty surrounding the identity of their eventual opponents has even delayed logistical arrangements, including confirmation of the kick-off time and the release of ticket sales information for supporters hoping to attend Wembley.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Hull owner Acun Ilıcalı was asked directly about the extraordinary situation and the impact it has had on his club.
However, the Turkish businessman initially chose to remain cautious in his public comments due to the ongoing investigation.
“I don’t know what the officials will decide,” Ilıcalı explained.
“I don’t want to make any statements because it’s something that is being investigated.”
He stressed that, from his perspective, too many details still remain unclear for him to make definitive judgments about the case.
“We don’t know who is involved or who is responsible,” he continued.
“At this time, it’s better for me not to comment.”
Hull Owner Admits He Would Be “Furious”
Despite his reluctance to directly criticise Southampton while the disciplinary process continues, Ilıcalı admitted he would react with enormous anger if his own team had experienced a similar situation.
Asked how he would feel if another club had allegedly spied on Hull’s preparations before such an important match, the Tigers owner made his feelings very clear.
“I would be furious,” he admitted.
“If everything is completely true and there is zero doubt, I would be furious.”
He also questioned whether the allegations could potentially point toward wider issues beyond a single isolated incident.
“And I would ask this question: How many times has it happened before?” Ilıcalı said.
The Hull owner acknowledged that the entire controversy has left him shocked, especially given the serious nature of the accusations and the huge consequences attached to the Championship play-offs.
“I would be very, very angry, of course, if everything is so solid,” he added.
“As a person, I don’t understand why people do things like that.”
Ilıcalı then emphasised how strongly he values fairness and justice both within football and in life generally.
“I always run for justice in my life,” he explained.
“But you see many things in life that surprises you, and on this I am surprised too.”
Despite the allegations involving Southampton, Ilıcalı was careful to distance the club’s ownership group from the controversy.
He insisted he viewed the Saints owners as good people and suggested he did not believe they were personally connected to the alleged actions being investigated.
“I know the owners of Southampton – they are good people,” he said.
“And I am sure this is nothing to do with them.”
However, he admitted he could not comment on individuals who may or may not have been involved at coaching or technical level.
“But whoever is involved on the technical side, I do not know,” he added.
“Whoever is involved, I think, put the evil in the football world this week.”
Debate Over Possible Punishments
The conversation then turned toward what punishments Southampton could potentially face if found guilty by the disciplinary commission.
Middlesbrough have reportedly pushed for the strongest possible sanction, including Southampton’s removal from the play-offs and Boro being reinstated into the final instead.
However, Ilıcalı admitted he was uncertain about what level of punishment would ultimately be appropriate.
“I’m not sure,” he said when asked whether a guilty club should automatically face expulsion.
The Hull owner then compared the situation to other forms of gamesmanship and controversial behaviour that have historically existed within football.
“For example, what happens in a game if someone dives to help their side win a trophy?” he asked.
“In football, there are sometimes these kind of things.”
He referenced incidents involving simulation and even famous historical examples of cheating in football to highlight how difficult it can be to determine proportional punishments.
“The punishment, what it should be, it’s hard to know without a clear mind,” Ilıcalı explained.
“But in football, you can dive to win a penalty and get a penalty.”
“Or hand of god, for example, some cheating happen in football sometimes.”
The Turkish businessman suggested he preferred leaving such decisions to the authorities overseeing the investigation rather than publicly demanding specific sanctions himself.
“Whether they should be punished, and how they should be punished, it’s hard for me to comment,” he continued.
He also acknowledged the awkwardness of publicly criticising a team that could very well become Hull’s opponents at Wembley in just a matter of days.
“Because, at the end of the day, they will probably be our opponent and I don’t want to speak negatively about our opponent,” Ilıcalı said.
Hull Fully Focused On Premier League Dream
Regardless of whether Hull eventually face Southampton or Middlesbrough at Wembley, Ilıcalı stressed that the club remain enormously proud of reaching the play-off final and are fully focused on achieving promotion to the Premier League.
The Championship play-off final is frequently described as the richest single match in club football because of the financial rewards attached to Premier League participation.
For Hull, the opportunity represents a potentially transformative moment for the club.
“It’s one game – a big game for us,” Ilıcalı said.
“If we win, we’re going to be in the Premier League, and that’s our dream.”
The owner praised the unity within the squad and the hunger currently driving everyone connected to the club ahead of the huge Wembley showdown.
“When you see our team, you see a very united team,” he explained.
“Everyone is dying for this game and the fans are very hungry.”
Ilıcalı also insisted he does not view either Southampton or Middlesbrough as overwhelming favourites should they eventually become Hull’s opponents.
Instead, he believes the final will ultimately come down to fine margins and decisive moments.
“These games are 50-50 games and crucial moments will decide,” he said.
“I think whether it’s Southampton or Middlesbrough, it’s 50-50 and we have every chance.”
Finally, Ilıcalı admitted he genuinely has no preference regarding who Hull would rather face at Wembley.
“If you asked me before which I’d like, I could not tell you because they are not superior to each other,” he concluded.
As the disciplinary investigation continues, Hull remain stuck in limbo while waiting for confirmation over one of the biggest matches in the club’s recent history.
