Emma Aicher has made it clear that she intends to challenge Mikaela Shiffrin once again for the overall World Cup Crystal Globe during the 2026-27 alpine skiing season.

After emerging as one of the breakout stars of the previous campaign, the young German skier believes she is now capable of pushing Shiffrin all the way in the battle for the sport’s biggest prize.

Aicher enjoyed a remarkable 2025-26 season, finishing second overall in the World Cup standings behind the American superstar. Shiffrin ultimately secured a record-equalling sixth overall Crystal Globe title, further cementing her place among the greatest alpine skiers in history.

However, despite Shiffrin’s experience and legendary status, Aicher finished only 87 points behind her rival by the end of the campaign, underlining just how competitive the battle became throughout the season.

The 22-year-old German has now admitted that winning the overall World Cup title is firmly in her sights for the upcoming season.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Olympics.com, Aicher explained that competing for the Crystal Globe had always been one of her biggest ambitions.

“That will be the goal,” she said when discussing the overall World Cup title race.

According to Aicher, she was even surprised by how closely she managed to compete with Shiffrin throughout the previous season. While she always believed in her own potential, she did not necessarily expect the title race to remain so close right until the final event.

She explained that her performances improved steadily as the season progressed, allowing her confidence to grow with each race.

“It has always been the goal, even if it was a bit surprising last season that I was able to keep up with Mikaela until the end, and that things remained so close right up to the final race,” Aicher stated.

“I was able to improve quite well during the season and getting stronger race by race.”

Aicher’s rise has been one of the biggest success stories in alpine skiing over the last year. At the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, she delivered a historic performance by winning silver in the downhill event.

That achievement ended Germany’s 28-year wait for an Olympic downhill medal and firmly established Aicher as one of the leading names in women’s alpine skiing.

She also added another Olympic medal by helping Germany claim silver in the team combined event, further highlighting her versatility across disciplines.

The thrilling World Cup battle between Aicher and Shiffrin captivated skiing fans throughout last season, but the German skier believes the competition for the Crystal Globe next year will extend beyond just the two of them.

When asked whether Shiffrin would be her biggest rival once again, Aicher pointed out that several other elite skiers are capable of challenging for the overall crown.

Among those she mentioned was Sofia Goggia, the Italian star who remains one of the strongest competitors on the circuit.

Goggia, a three-time Olympic downhill medallist, finished fourth in the overall World Cup standings last season and continues to be regarded as one of the sport’s most dangerous racers.

Aicher also acknowledged the strength of Camille Rast, who enjoyed an impressive campaign of her own in 2025-26.

Rast finished third overall in the World Cup standings and also captured silver in the slalom event at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

“There is not only Mikaela, there are some girls who are strong in three disciplines,” Aicher explained.

That depth of competition is expected to make the upcoming season one of the most exciting in recent memory, with multiple skiers now capable of competing consistently across several disciplines.

Still, much of the spotlight will inevitably remain on the rivalry between Aicher and Shiffrin after their dramatic title duel last season.

Shiffrin continues to set new standards within the sport and remains the benchmark for every skier on the World Cup circuit. Yet Aicher’s rapid improvement has convinced many observers that she could soon become the American’s biggest long-term challenger.

The provisional schedule for the 2026-27 FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup season has already been released, with the women’s calendar set to begin in Sölden on 24 October.

The traditional season-opening giant slalom event in Austria is expected to provide the first glimpse of how the leading contenders are shaping up ahead of another intense World Cup campaign.

Meanwhile, veteran American star Lindsey Vonn has also been nominated to the U.S. Alpine skiing team for the upcoming season, adding another fascinating storyline to the year ahead.

With Aicher continuing her rapid development, Shiffrin chasing more history, and several other world-class skiers capable of challenging for victories, the 2026-27 season is already shaping up to be a thrilling battle for the Crystal Globe.
