Lawrence Shankland has revealed why he ultimately decided to join Rangers F.C. after ending his four-year spell with Heart of Midlothian F.C., admitting the opportunity to represent his boyhood club was simply too important to turn down.

The striker completed his switch from Tynecastle to Ibrox ahead of the summer transfer window and has already conducted his first interview with Rangers’ official club media following the move.

Shankland signed a two-year contract with Rangers, with the agreement also containing the option for a third season.

The transfer marks the end of a significant chapter in the forward’s career after four memorable years in Edinburgh, where he became one of Hearts’ most influential players and one of the most admired captains in recent seasons.

During his time at Tynecastle, Shankland scored 88 goals in 171 appearances while wearing maroon and established himself as a fan favourite through both his leadership and goalscoring exploits.

The Scotland international had already posted an emotional farewell message to Hearts supporters on social media before officially beginning the next stage of his career at Rangers.

Shankland Delighted to Finally Complete Rangers Move

Speaking to Rangers TV after the transfer was confirmed, Shankland admitted the move felt like something that had been developing for years.

“Delighted, first and foremost obviously, to get this opportunity,” the striker explained.

According to Shankland, speculation linking him with Rangers had followed him throughout several transfer windows, making the completed move feel overdue in some ways.

“It feels a wee bit like a long time coming, to be honest,” he admitted.

“There have been times I’ve been rumoured with it but I am just delighted to finally get it done and be a Rangers player.”

The striker explained that stories surrounding a possible switch to Ibrox had become a regular occurrence over the last four or five years.

“Probably every transfer window for the last four or five years, to be honest, and dealing with the messages from outside,” he said.

Shankland admitted that family and friends would often contact him whenever rumours surfaced linking him with Rangers.

“Family and stuff, asking if it was true,” he explained.

Despite the constant speculation, however, the striker insisted he always remained focused on his responsibilities at Hearts and refused to become distracted by transfer talk.

“To be fair, I always just had to remain focused with my job at hand,” he added.

Boyhood Club Dream Too Strong to Ignore

The situation changed dramatically once genuine interest from Rangers arrived this week.

According to Shankland, hearing that Rangers were seriously pursuing him immediately convinced him that the move was right.

“When I heard the interest was real coming this week, I was really tempted straight away,” he admitted.

The striker explained that supporting Rangers growing up made the decision especially emotional and meaningful.

“Being my boyhood club, it’s always a dream to play for,” he said.

Because of that personal connection, Shankland revealed he was determined to complete the transfer as quickly as possible.

“I was really keen to get it done,” he explained.

The move also represents the culmination of years of work and persistence throughout his career.

“It’s an opportunity that I’ve waited a long time for,” Shankland said.

“A lot of hard graft has went into that to get to this point.”

Now officially a Rangers player, the striker is focused on ensuring his time at Ibrox becomes a successful period in his career.

“I’m just delighted to be here, first and foremost,” he added.

“I want to come here and be a successful Rangers player as well.”

Transfer Talks Interrupted Family Holiday

Shankland also revealed that negotiations surrounding the move interrupted his family holiday while the transfer was being finalised.

The Scotland striker explained that his wife and children became frustrated because much of his attention was focused on completing the deal instead of relaxing.

“I was away with the missus and the kids, so they were getting a wee bit frustrated with me, that I wasn’t spending much time in the pool,” he joked.

However, Shankland made it clear that ensuring the move happened was his priority.

“But I had a lot of business to take care of,” he said.

“As I said, I was really keen to get this done, and make it happen. So that was the business I had to do.”

Desire to Bring Success Back to Rangers

Shankland also spoke about his ambition to help Rangers challenge for major honours again after joining the club.

The striker explained that he understands the expectations and standards that come with representing Rangers and wants to play a key role in returning success to Ibrox.

“I want to be successful,” he said.

“The club are in a position where they want to get back to winning titles more regularly.”

Shankland believes he can contribute significantly to that objective and is determined to make a positive impact.

“I want to be a big part of that and that’s what I come here to do,” he explained.

Lessons Learned During Hearts Captaincy

One of the biggest areas of development during Shankland’s time at Hearts came through his experience as club captain.

The striker admitted that the last two or three seasons in Edinburgh taught him valuable lessons about leadership, responsibility, and handling pressure.

“The last two or three years have been huge in terms of development on that side of the game in leadership,” he explained.

Shankland acknowledged that captaining a major Scottish club brings significant challenges both on and off the pitch.

“It’s not easy to be a captain at times, and especially at Hearts, another big club,” he said.

According to the striker, the pressure and scrutiny that come with leading Hearts helped him grow both professionally and personally.

“There’s a lot of pressures there as well,” he added.

Despite those difficulties, Shankland believes he handled the role successfully and gained valuable experience that he can now bring to Rangers.

“So it’s a responsibility I felt I’ve dealt with pretty well,” he explained.

“There’s a lot of good experience that I’ve gained through it, good and bad.”

Tough Moments Helped Him Grow

The striker also reflected on difficult periods during his spell at Tynecastle and how overcoming those moments strengthened him mentally.

“A couple of tough moments in there as well with Hearts that we had to deal with and come through,” Shankland admitted.

Despite those setbacks, he believes Hearts enjoyed a strong campaign overall last season.

“We had a good season last year,” he added.

Now, Shankland feels he arrives at Rangers as a more mature and complete player because of everything he experienced in Edinburgh.

“I come here with all those learning curves done and I feel I’m in a really good spot in my career to join Rangers,” he explained.

Hearts Will Always Mean a Lot to Him

Although Shankland is excited about beginning a new chapter at Rangers, he also made clear that leaving Hearts was not an easy decision emotionally.

“When you come to make decisions, it’s never easy,” he admitted.

However, the fact Rangers were his childhood club ultimately made the move easier to accept.

“It’s a bit easier the fact that it’s obviously Rangers and my boyhood club,” he explained.

The striker expressed gratitude toward Hearts for everything the club provided during the last four years.

“Hearts have been a huge part of my life for the last four years for me and my family,” he said.

Shankland acknowledged the opportunities he received at Tynecastle and insisted he will always appreciate the support shown to him.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity they gave me,” he added.

“Four years of my career is a long time to spend there as well and I’ll always be grateful for the opportunities they gave me.”

He also emphasised that he leaves the club on positive terms and with respect for everyone involved.

“A really good club and I’m glad I’ve left it on good terms with everybody there,” he said.

Danny Röhl Excited by Rangers Addition

New Rangers head coach Danny Röhl also shared his excitement after the club confirmed Shankland’s arrival.

Röhl believes the striker’s experience, mentality, and proven scoring record make him an ideal addition to the squad.

“We are delighted to have Lawrence join Rangers,” Röhl said.

The German coach praised several key aspects of Shankland’s game and personality.

“He is a player with proven quality, leadership and work ethic, and his goalscoring record in Scotland speaks for itself,” Röhl explained.

The manager also highlighted the striker’s understanding of the expectations that come with representing Rangers.

“He understands the demands and expectations that come with playing for Rangers,” he added.

According to Röhl, Shankland’s personality and experience will positively influence the dressing room as well.

“We believe his character and experience will be a huge asset for the group,” he said.

New Rangers Attack Taking Shape

Shankland is expected to strengthen Rangers’ attacking options alongside players such as Youssef Chermiti, Ryan Naderi, and Bojan Miovski.

Röhl believes the Scotland striker can provide a clear focal point in attack while also bringing leadership qualities developed during his time as Hearts captain.

The Rangers boss also wished Shankland success ahead of his summer international commitments.

“I wish him well at the World Cup this summer, and look forward to welcoming him back to Glasgow during pre-season,” Röhl concluded.

For Shankland, the transfer represents both the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition and the beginning of one of the biggest challenges of his career as he attempts to help Rangers return to regular title-winning success.
