Hearts move closer to signing Malachi Fagan-Walcott as deal with York City is agreed
Heart of Midlothian have taken a significant step towards securing the services of defender Malachi Fagan-Walcott after reaching an agreement with York City over a transfer fee for the highly-rated centre-back.
The Tynecastle club have been working on a deal for the 24-year-old for some time and identified him as one of their priority defensive targets ahead of the new season. Although initial attempts to sign the player were unsuccessful, negotiations have continued behind the scenes, and progress has now been made with both clubs finally finding common ground over a transfer package.

The breakthrough represents an important development for Hearts as they continue reshaping their squad during what is expected to be a busy summer recruitment period.
Hearts Persisted Despite Early Setbacks
Hearts’ interest in Fagan-Walcott has been well established throughout the transfer window, with the Scottish Premiership side making a determined effort to bring the defender to Edinburgh.
However, their pursuit was far from straightforward.
York City, fresh from their successful promotion campaign, were reluctant to part ways with one of their standout performers and rejected Hearts’ initial offers. The English club viewed Fagan-Walcott as a valuable asset and believed his performances warranted a substantial transfer fee.
At the same time, Hearts remained cautious about overpaying.
The club’s recruitment team were unwilling to be forced into agreeing to inflated demands and instead maintained a patient approach while discussions continued.
That patience now appears to have paid off.
After further rounds of negotiations, both clubs have managed to reach an agreement that paves the way for the next stage of the transfer process.
Personal Terms Now the Next Hurdle
Although an agreement has now been reached between the two clubs, the transfer is not yet complete.
Hearts must now focus on finalising personal terms with Fagan-Walcott before the move can be officially confirmed.
Discussions regarding the player’s contract are expected to take place in the coming days as both parties work towards finding an agreement.
Should those talks prove successful, the defender will then undergo a medical examination before completing the final formalities of the transfer.
Only once those steps have been completed will the move be officially concluded.
Nevertheless, the agreement between Hearts and York City represents a major step forward and leaves the transfer significantly closer to completion than at any previous stage.
Jamestown Analytics Identified Fagan-Walcott as Ideal Fit
The defender’s arrival would be another example of Hearts relying on modern recruitment methods to identify talent.
Jamestown Analytics, the data-led recruitment company that plays an influential role in the club’s transfer strategy, reportedly highlighted Fagan-Walcott as a strong candidate for the Scottish Premiership.
The analytical assessment concluded that the defender’s attributes would translate effectively to Scottish football.
His performances throughout York City’s title-winning season further reinforced that belief.
Fagan-Walcott played a key role as York secured promotion from the National League and earned widespread praise for his consistency at the heart of the defence.
His physical presence, defensive awareness and ability to contribute in attacking situations made him one of the most effective centre-backs in the division.
Defensive Strength Combined With Goal Threat
One of the qualities that has particularly attracted Hearts is Fagan-Walcott’s ability to influence matches at both ends of the pitch.
While his primary responsibility remains defending, he has also demonstrated a knack for scoring important goals.
During York City’s successful National League campaign, the defender found the net eight times.
That return represented an impressive contribution for a centre-back and highlighted his effectiveness during set-piece situations.
His aerial ability and physical strength often caused problems for opposing defences, providing an additional attacking weapon whenever York pushed forward.
Those qualities are likely to appeal to Hearts manager and coaching staff, who are eager to add greater versatility and threat throughout the squad.
A defender capable of contributing goals can often make a significant difference over the course of a long season.
Tottenham Roots Helped Shape Career
Fagan-Walcott’s football journey began at Tottenham Hotspur FC, where he progressed through the club’s youth system.
Although he never established himself as a regular member of Tottenham’s senior side, his development within one of England’s leading academies provided a strong foundation for his professional career.
Like many young players seeking first-team opportunities, he gained valuable experience through a series of loan spells.
Those temporary moves allowed him to develop his game and gain exposure to different styles of football.
Importantly for Hearts supporters, some of those experiences came north of the border.
Previous Experience in Scottish Football
The defender is no stranger to Scottish football.
During his time as a Tottenham player, Fagan-Walcott spent loan periods with both Dunfermline Athletic FC and Dundee FC.
Those spells provided him with valuable experience of the Scottish game and helped him adapt to its physical demands and competitive nature.
Although he was still developing at the time, those opportunities gave him an understanding of the environment he could soon return to on a permanent basis.
That familiarity may prove beneficial if the move to Hearts is completed.
Rather than arriving in an entirely new football culture, he already possesses first-hand knowledge of Scottish football and what is required to succeed within it.
York Move Revitalised Career
Following his departure from Tottenham, Fagan-Walcott eventually found stability with York City.
After initially impressing during his time with the club, he later made the move permanent and established himself as a key figure in their squad.
His performances continued to improve over successive seasons.
The defender became one of the team’s most reliable players and helped provide the consistency required for a successful promotion challenge.
York’s rise from the National League owed much to the strength of their defensive unit, with Fagan-Walcott playing a central role throughout the campaign.
His leadership, physical presence and goal-scoring contributions ensured he became one of the most highly regarded defenders outside the English Football League.
It is therefore little surprise that clubs from higher divisions began monitoring his progress.
Competition for Signature Was Growing
Hearts were not the only club interested in securing the defender’s services.
Strong performances for York attracted attention from elsewhere, with a number of clubs keeping a close watch on his situation.
Among those believed to have shown interest were Oxford United FC, who were reportedly considering a move of their own.
The League One side viewed Fagan-Walcott as a player capable of strengthening their defensive options and had been monitoring developments throughout the summer.
However, Hearts appear to have gained the upper hand in the race.
The opportunity to play in the Scottish Premiership and potentially feature in European competition is understood to have been a major attraction for the player.
For many footballers, the chance to compete on a bigger stage can prove decisive when choosing between competing offers.
Hearts Continue Defensive Rebuild
Securing Fagan-Walcott would represent another important piece of Hearts’ ongoing defensive restructuring.
The club have already moved to strengthen that area of the squad with the addition of MJ Kamson-Kamara.
Kamson-Kamara arrived following his departure from Lincoln City FC after an impressive loan spell with Glentoran FC.
His arrival addressed one need within the squad, but Hearts remain determined to add further depth and quality.
The pursuit of Fagan-Walcott demonstrates the club’s commitment to ensuring they are adequately equipped for the challenges ahead.
With domestic and potentially European commitments on the horizon, squad depth will be essential.
Injuries and Departures Created Need for Reinforcements
The desire to strengthen the centre-back department has been driven in part by recent setbacks.
Defender Craig Halkett is facing a lengthy absence after suffering a serious Achilles injury.
His recovery is expected to keep him sidelined for a significant period, creating an obvious need for additional defensive cover.
Meanwhile, Frankie Kent has departed following the expiration of his contract.
The combination of injury and departure has reduced the club’s options in central defence and made recruitment a necessity rather than a luxury.
Bringing in Fagan-Walcott would help address those concerns while adding competition for places within the squad.
Busy Summer Continues at Tynecastle
The pursuit of Fagan-Walcott forms part of a wider recruitment drive at Tynecastle.
Hearts have already announced the signing of winger Calvin Miller from Falkirk FC.
The arrival of Miller followed the earlier addition of Josh McPake from St Johnstone FC.
Those signings have strengthened the squad in attacking areas, but the club’s recruitment activity is expected to continue.
Further arrivals are already being lined up.
French duo Tom Renaud and Amadou Ba-Sy are widely expected to join from FC Versailles and FC Rouen respectively.
More Business Expected Before Window Closes
Hearts officials remain active in the transfer market and are expected to pursue additional targets before the summer window shuts.
The club’s recruitment strategy focuses on identifying players who can strengthen the squad both immediately and in the long term.
Fagan-Walcott appears to fit that profile perfectly.
At 24 years of age, he offers a combination of experience, development potential and familiarity with Scottish football.
Should personal terms be successfully agreed and a medical completed without issues, Hearts supporters may soon see another new face arrive at Tynecastle as preparations continue for the upcoming campaign.
For now, the club have overcome one of the biggest obstacles by agreeing a fee with York City, bringing them significantly closer to securing the defender’s signature.
